This article is thematically related to the study "Nominalizing tendencies in the language of economy" in Studia Germanistica 3; it responds to questions connected with research for the doctoral dissertation "Grammatische Mittel der Informationskondensierung in Wirtschaftstexten". This paper examines means of expressing emotions in internet commentaries on one of the most important football matches of the World Cup 2010 – the semi-final between Germany and Spain. Football contains enormous emotional potential which directly influences text production. The commentaries clearly reveal a polarity of emotions. In the corpus, intensive emotional experiences are manifested in a wide variability of linguistic means, of which the most frequent are lexical means and rhetorical figures, especially metaphors. Internet communication also offers non-verbal means of expressing emotion that are typical of so-called cyberslang.
