German media theory arises within the field of literary studies at the beginning of the eighties, and has been playing since then a major role in communication and media studies around the world. However, many literary scholars are unaware of the so called German "media turn", which produced important contributions for the contemporary debate on the issues concerning text, media, meaning, perception, and technology. This article presents a discussion of the aforementioned debate, focusing on authors such as Benjamin, Schmidt and Flusser.
