The article investigates a particular mode of semanticization of space in storytelling: it explores cases of narrative de-semanticization of space, especially of interior space. The focus of this endeavor is on the relation of the narrative creation of space and narratological self-reflection. In a reading of Descartes' "Discours de la méthode", the article exposes how the philosophical construction of the spaceless "je pense, donc je suis" diminishes the production of spatial meaningfulness provided by the narrative from which it emerges, thus exhibiting the disparity of Descartes' philosophical and narrative concepts of space. - Unlike Descartes' "Discours", Richard Ford's story "I'm Here" (from the volume "Let Me Be Frank With You") performs spatial desemanticization by staging physical destruction of interior space. The article examines how the narrative, by introducing the disintegration of a home, constructs its own starting point and thus exposes its self-generation originating in an imaginary lack of spatial significance.

The article examines the textile trace that constitutes the spatial system and narrative of Gottfried Keller's "Regine"-novella (1881). Keller’s novella can be read as an example of a shift that takes place in the literary use of textiles in the nineteenth century. Until then textiles in literature - such as the veil or the weave - were mostly of metaphorical importance. Interlaced with socio-economical changes in production, distribution and consumption of textiles, this changed toward a more material approach. In a close reading of the novella, the article shows how Keller explores und undermines the suggestive and imaginative potential of fabrics while expounding the figures' struggle with the sheer materiality of their surroundings.

  4. 'Kult' und 'show' im Großherzogtum : Raum- und Repräsentationssemantiken in Thomas Manns "Königliche Hoheit"

"Königliche Hoheit", Thomas Mann's second novel, is as replete with descriptions of interiors, paintings, decorations and other spatial features as it is obsessed with the very concept of 'representation'. The complex interplay of 'space' and 'signification' that underlies this text has not received much scholarly attention. This paper attempts to elucidate how "Königliche Hoheit" interweaves descriptions of space(s) and thorny semiotic issues. In the process, it seeks to show that the novel, far from being a harmless 'fairytale' grounded in Mann's own biography, is suffused with exclusionary ideology.

The article shows, through a close reading of the two first chapters of Kafka's novel "The Trial", that the irruption of the extraordinary and inexplicable in Kafka's text is demonstrated above all in a shift of the spatial order. The disturbance of K., the derangement of his habitual surrounding becomes readable not through his interiority, but rather in a literal de-rangement of interior spaces and of their objects that are presented in their exteriority.
