Linguistic aspects in translation studies are occasionally rejected, although the starting point of this science was linguistics itself. If, however, the attention is drawn to the importance of culture in the translation process, it can be recognized that the consideration of cultural conditions is of pragmatic origin, if only because culture and communication are actors that are indispensable neither in pragmatics nor in translation studies. The translator considers himself not only as a person who translates a text from one language into another language, but also as a cultural mediator, especially when it comes to texts that contain cultural aspects. The translator is therefore obliged to capture every cultural fact in source texts and to transfer them to the TL, taking into account cultural norms and conventions. It is important that the communicative function of the text is also fulfilled in translation. The communicative act is considered to have been completed when the translation can be received by its readers in a way that is appropriate to their intentions. The extent to which a translation can display qualitative characteristics depends on the cultural competence of its translator. Accordingly, the translator moves between a complex network of pragmatics, culture, communication and translation. Each link requires knowledge and skills that a translator should acquire in order to make his or her translations work as a communication tool. In this article we will therefore illustrate firstly the interrelationships between the various fields, and then look at the cultural aspects in texts. The successive "turns" in translation studies will also be mentioned, especially as they provide an insight into how the "text as culture" comes into focus and how "culture in the text" is to be understood. Using text examples from everyday life and literature, the aim is to show what priority it is given to taking cultural aspects of pragmatics into account during the translation process, since the consequences of disregarding cultural conditions ultimately lead to communication disorders or even failure of communication.

  2. Yabancılık Dereceleri Işığında Katharina Reiss'ın Metin Tiplerine Yeni Bir Bakış A New View on Katharina Reiss' Text Types Using Degrees of Alienness

Waldenfels'in yaklaşımı çeviri alanına uyarlandığında, kaynak metinde geçen yabancı fenomenleri derecelerine göre ayrıştırmak çevirmenlere kolaylık sağlamaktadır. Due to the increasing importance of concepts such as alienness and foreignness and the rise of xenological and phenomenological studies in the field of philology, a translational approach has become necessary. From a translation studies perspective, translators are exposed to alienness in every source text. The translator's focus is on the transfer of those foreign phenomena to the target text. In this context, it makes sense to benefit from both xenology and phenomenology, since the main purpose of xenology is to reveal the alienness problem; phenomenology, on the other hand, makes the alien phenomenon visible. Waldenfels' approach to the phenomenology of alienness is based on alien experience and alien understanding, thereby establishing the degrees of alienness. When Waldenfels' approach is applied in translation studies, it offers translators a way to recognize foreign phenomena more easily in the source text and classify them according to their degree. Therefore, this study couples Katharina Reiss' text type model with Bernhard Waldenfels' work on degrees of alienness and provides a new perspective on Reiss' approach. In this context, Waldenfels' approach, when applied to the field of translation, can help to differentiate foreign phenomena according to their degree. Together with Reiss's text typology, translators can use the determination of their text type to identify what kind of alienness they may be dealing with and to review their translation decisions. Since every determination makes alienness visible in a sense, it can be said that this visibility can also be effective in the translation process, because depending on the text type and the translator's scope, the visibility of the alien in the target text can vary.
