    Para obter informações sobre os processos de pós-edição (PE) e tomada de decisão no par linguístico alemão/português, este trabalho apresenta os resultados de um estudo experimental de PE das partículas modais alemãs (PMs) doch e wohl para o português brasileiro. As PMs são elementos linguísticos que apresentam dificuldades de tradução e PE, pois são diretamente dependentes do contexto em que operam. Com a intenção de investigar o esforço cognitivo despendido no processamento das PMs em tarefas de PE, foram utilizados três instrumentos de pesquisa: o programa Translog-II; o rastreador ocular Tobii T60; relatos retrospectivos (livre e guiado). Para a realização do experimento, 20 participantes brasileiros pós-editaram cinco insumos de tradução automática para o português com as PMs doch e wohl. Os resultados corroboram a suposição de GUTT (1998) e os resultados da análise processual conduzida por ALVES (2007), que revelam que a relação entre esforço e efeito não acontece com base em uma associação de proporção direta. Portanto, a análise do processamento das PMs em tarefas de PE demonstra que, em ambientes cognitivos diferenciados, a capacidade de metarrepresentação tem implicações distintas na atribuição do mínimo esforço cognitivo necessário para se alcançar um determinado efeito contextual. German Modal Particles (MPs) are linguistic elements that pose severe difficulties for the translation and post-editing processes. One of the major reasons for such hindrance is the context-dependence function of the MP. This work is an effort to collect relevant information about the translation and decision-making processes in the German/Portuguese language pair. It presents the results of an experimental study on post-editing the MPs doch and wohl into Brazilian Portuguese. In order to empirically investigate the cognitive effort required to post-edit machine translated modal particles, three research instruments were used, namely: the software Translog-II; the eye tracker Tobii T60; a prospective questionnaire (free and guided). In the experiment, twenty Brazilian participants were asked to post-edit five Portuguese machine translation outputs with MP's doch and wohl. The results here presented tend to confirm the hypothesis by GUTT (1998) and the study on processing analysis performed by ALVES (2007), which show that the relation between effort and effect does not obey a linear relation among themselves. Therefore, the analysis of how modal particles are processed in post-editing tasks tends to show that different cognitive environments imply distinct allocation of the minimum cognitive effort needed to achieve a relevant contextual effect.

    This work is an effort to collect relevant information about the decision making process on the communicative functions of the modal particles (henceforth MP), regarding different contexts. For this purpose, an online questionnaire was developed. For the data collection, sixty-two German native and non-native participants were asked to select from a set of sentences (with or without MPs) which provided the most adequate interpretations for pre-established contexts. The results suggest that native participants were more likely to select the expected options, but the reflections on the decisions taken were challenging for both groups. Therefore, data analysis indicates deficiencies in understanding the function and modal complexity of MPs. Thus, in addition to investigating the decision making process of both groups, we sought to offer tools for teaching MPs in German as a foreign language Este trabalho teve a intenção de investigar sobre o processo de tomada de decisão quanto às funções comunicativas das partículas modais (doravante PM), frente a diferentes contextos. Nesse sentido, aplicamos um questionário online em alemão. Para a coleta de dados foi solicitado a 62 participantes alemães nativos e não nativos que selecionassem dentre um conjunto de orações (contendo ou não PMs) as que proporcionariam interpretações adequadas para contextos pré-estabelecidos. Os resultados apontam que os participantes nativos tiveram maior facilidade em selecionar as opções esperadas nas tarefas apresentadas, porém as reflexões sobre as decisões tomadas foram desafiadoras para ambos os grupos. Portanto, a análise de dados indica deficiências na compreensão da função e complexidade modal das PMs. Assim, além de investigar as decisões tomadas pelos dois grupos, procuramos oferecer ferramentas para o ensino das PMs em aulas de alemão.
