    An international team of literary and social historians investigate here diverse forms of formal and informal censorship practices. In this context censorship designates a complex and tension-filled relationship between the spirit of innovation and the conservative forces of the status quo. Culture connotes not just the production of texts for the book trade and the theatre, but any kind of sanctioned attempt to control public opinion. The chronological framework is designed to highlight the culturally and politically eventful years between Weimar Classicism and Weimar Republic (1787-1933) which saw the evolution of a pan-German cultural identity. Two concluding essays on the American reception of the Nazi book burning of May 10, 1933, and censorship practices of the Cultural Ministry of the former GDR round out the historical picture, demonstrating the continuity of control mechanisms. Namhafte Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler stellen hier eine Vielfalt von Phänomenen zur Diskussion, die mit unterschiedlichen Arten staatlicher und privater Überwachung symbolischer Sinnstiftung zu tun haben. Zensur wird als eine äußerst komplexe und spannungsreiche Beziehung zwischen Geist und Macht verstanden, und mit 'Kultur' ist nicht nur die Textproduktion für Buchhandel und Theater gemeint, sondern jegliche Art von Sinnstiftung. Die chronologische Spannweite will ein überregionales Bild der positiven sowie auch negativen Kontrollinstanzen während der kulturellen und politischen Umwälzungen in Deutschland zwischen Weimarer Klassik und Weimarer Republik (1787-1933) entstehen lassen. In einem "Nachspiel der Machtspiele" erweitern Ausführungen zur amerikanischen Rezeption der Bücherverbrennung vom 10. Mai 1933 sowie eine Auswertung von Zensurbelegen des Archivs des Kulturministeriums der ehemaligen DDR die Perspektive der Zensurerfahrungen um eine besonders aktuelle Dimension.

    Until well into the present century, and in the face of all existing statistics, there was a widely held belief reflected in scientific writings, literature, journalism and accepted folk knowledge that poison was a murder weapon almost excusively used by women (the 'weaker', 'gender determined' sex). The present study is discourse-theoretical and interdisciplinary in design. It draws on collections of causes célèbres, court records, scientific texts etc. pertaining to cases of killing by poison from various periods to show that (and how) such stereotypic ideas about women achieved currency, legitimation and self-perpetuation as a result of a constant, circular process of exchange and reference between the sources they stemmed from. Wider alle Statistik ging man in Wissenschaft, Literatur, Publizistik und Alltagswissen bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein davon aus, daß sich primär das - "schwache" und "geschlechtsbestimmte" - Weib des Giftes als Mordmittel bediene. In der vorliegenden diskurstheoretisch und interdisziplinär orientierten Studie konnte anhand der Auseinandersetzung mit Pitavalgeschichten, Prozeßberichten, wissenschaftlichen Texten usw. zu Giftmordfällen verschiedener historischer Zeiträume gezeigt werden, daß und wie diese stereotypen Weiblichkeitsbilder von den genannten Bereichen im beständigen Austausch mit- und Verweis aufeinander formiert, legitimiert und fortgeschrieben werden.

Over the last three decades, Halloween has grown to rival Christmas in its popularity and profitability; dark tourism has emerged as a rapidly expanding industry; and funerals have become less traditional. "Corpse chic" and "skull style" have entered mainstream fashion, while elements of gothic, horror, torture porn, and slasher movies have streamed into more conventional genres. Monsters have become pop culture heroes: vampires, zombies, and serial killers now appeal broadly to audiences of all ages.     "Conflict and trauma remain among the most prevalent themes in film and literature. Comics has never avoided such narratives, and comics artists are writing them in ways that are both different from and complementary to literature and film. In Comics, Trauma, and the New Art of War, Harriet E. H. Earle brings together two distinct areas of research--trauma studies and comics studies--to provide a new interpretation of a long-standing theme. Focusing on representations of conflict in post-Vietnam War American comics, Earle claims that the comics form is uniquely able to show traumatic experience by representing events as viscerally as possible. Using texts from across the form and placing mainstream superhero comics alongside alternative and art comics, Earle suggests that comics are the ideal artistic representation of trauma. Because comics bridge the gap between the visual and the written, they represent such complicated narratives as loss and trauma in unique ways, particularly through the manipulation of time and experience. Comics can fold time and confront traumatic events, be they personal or shared, through a myriad of both literary and visual devices. As a result, comics can represent trauma in ways that are unavailable to other narrative and artistic forms. With themes such as dreams and mourning, Earle concentrates on trauma in American comics after the Vietnam War. These works include Alissa Torres's American Widow, Doug Murray's The 'Nam, and Art Spiegelman's much-lauded Maus. These works pair with ideas from a wide range of thinkers, including Sigmund Freud, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Fredric Jameson, as well as contemporary trauma theory and clinical psychology. Through these examples and others, Comics, Trauma, and the New Art of War proves that comics open up new avenues to explore personal and public trauma in extraordinary, necessary ways."--

Contending narratives, however, sometimes within the same texts, point to the effective subversion and undoing of the normative restrictions of social and gender hierarchies. Words Like Daggers explores the scolding invectives, malevolent curses, and ecstatic prophesies of early modern women as attested to in legal documents, letters, self-narratives, popular pamphlets, ballads, and dramas of the era. Examining the framing and performance of violent female speech between the 1590s and the 1660s, Kirilka Stavreva dismantles the myth of the silent and obedient women who allegedly populated early modern England. Blending gender theory with detailed historical analysis, Words Like Daggers asserts the power of women's language--the power to subvert binaries and destabilize social hierarchies, particularly those of gender, in the early modern era. In the process Stavreva reconstructs the speech acts of individual contentious women, such as the scold Janet Dalton, the witch Alice Samuel, and the Quaker Elizabeth Stirredge. Because the dramatic potential of women's powerful rhetorical performances was recognized not only by victims and witnesses of individual violent speech acts but also by theater professionals, Stavreva also focuses on how the stage, arguably the most influential cultural institution of the Renaissance era, orchestrated and aestheticized women's fighting words and, in so doing, showcased and augmented their cultural significance. Taking the publication of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s Epistemologies of the Closet as emblematic of the Library’s inability to account for sexual difference, Melissa Adler embarks upon a detailed critique of how cataloging systems have delimited and proscribed expressions of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and race in a manner that mirrors psychiatric and sociological attempts to pathologize non-normative sexual practices and civil subjects. Taking up a parallel analysis, Adler utilizes Roderick A. Ferguson’s Aberrations in Black as another example of how the Library of Congress fails to account for, and thereby “buries,” difference. She examines the physical space of the Library as one that encourages forms of governmentality as theorized by Michel Foucault while also allowing for its utopian possibilities. Finally, she offers a brief but highly illuminating history of the Delta Collection. Likely established before the turn of the twentieth century and active until its gradual dissolution in the 1960s, the Delta Collection was a secret archive within the Library of Congress that housed materials confiscated by the United States Post Office and other federal agencies. These were materials deemed too obscene for public dissemination or general access. Adler reveals how the Delta Collection was used to regulate difference and squelch dissent in the McCarthy era while also linking it to evolving understandings of so-called perversion in the scientific study of sexual difference. Sophisticated, engrossing, and highly readable, Cruising the Library provides us with a critical understanding of library science, an alternative view of discourses around the history of sexuality, and an analysis of the relationship between governmentality and the cataloging of research and information―as well as categories of difference―in American culture.

This book examines the insights offered by approaching the question using a cognitive theory of culture. The Codex and Crafts in Late Antiquity examines surviving evidence in order to better understand how this transition took place. Placing the codex into the general cultural, religious, and technological context of Late Antiquity, the book examines the major types of codices--the wooden tablet codex, the single-quire codex and the multi-quire codex--in all their structural, technical, and decorative features.     An international team of literary and social historians investigate here diverse forms of formal and informal censorship practices. In this context censorship designates a complex and tension-filled relationship between the spirit of innovation and the conservative forces of the status quo. Culture connotes not just the production of texts for the book trade and the theatre, but any kind of sanctioned attempt to control public opinion. The chronological framework is designed to highlight the culturally and politically eventful years between Weimar Classicism and Weimar Republic (1787-1933) which saw the evolution of a pan-German cultural identity. Two concluding essays on the American reception of the Nazi book burning of May 10, 1933, and censorship practices of the Cultural Ministry of the former GDR round out the historical picture, demonstrating the continuity of control mechanisms. Namhafte Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler stellen hier eine Vielfalt von Phänomenen zur Diskussion, die mit unterschiedlichen Arten staatlicher und privater Überwachung symbolischer Sinnstiftung zu tun haben. Zensur wird als eine äußerst komplexe und spannungsreiche Beziehung zwischen Geist und Macht verstanden, und mit 'Kultur' ist nicht nur die Textproduktion für Buchhandel und Theater gemeint, sondern jegliche Art von Sinnstiftung. Die chronologische Spannweite will ein überregionales Bild der positiven sowie auch negativen Kontrollinstanzen während der kulturellen und politischen Umwälzungen in Deutschland zwischen Weimarer Klassik und Weimarer Republik (1787-1933) entstehen lassen. In einem "Nachspiel der Machtspiele" erweitern Ausführungen zur amerikanischen Rezeption der Bücherverbrennung vom 10. Mai 1933 sowie eine Auswertung von Zensurbelegen des Archivs des Kulturministeriums der ehemaligen DDR die Perspektive der Zensurerfahrungen um eine besonders aktuelle Dimension.

    Until well into the present century, and in the face of all existing statistics, there was a widely held belief reflected in scientific writings, literature, journalism and accepted folk knowledge that poison was a murder weapon almost excusively used by women (the 'weaker', 'gender determined' sex). The present study is discourse-theoretical and interdisciplinary in design. It draws on collections of causes célèbres, court records, scientific texts etc. pertaining to cases of killing by poison from various periods to show that (and how) such stereotypic ideas about women achieved currency, legitimation and self-perpetuation as a result of a constant, circular process of exchange and reference between the sources they stemmed from. Wider alle Statistik ging man in Wissenschaft, Literatur, Publizistik und Alltagswissen bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein davon aus, daß sich primär das - "schwache" und "geschlechtsbestimmte" - Weib des Giftes als Mordmittel bediene. In der vorliegenden diskurstheoretisch und interdisziplinär orientierten Studie konnte anhand der Auseinandersetzung mit Pitavalgeschichten, Prozeßberichten, wissenschaftlichen Texten usw. zu Giftmordfällen verschiedener historischer Zeiträume gezeigt werden, daß und wie diese stereotypen Weiblichkeitsbilder von den genannten Bereichen im beständigen Austausch mit- und Verweis aufeinander formiert, legitimiert und fortgeschrieben werden.
