Drawn from theatre events variously described as documentary, post-dramatic, and live art, the texts collected here seldom look or read like plays-some comprise rules for improvisation; others could best be described as theatrical scenarios; a few are transcripts; one includes a soup recipe. Yet amid these dramaturgical tests and trials, one finds poetry: heartbreaking stories of disability and triumph as well as strange, disjointed fairy tales interrupted by communist songs. This volume is an extension of the original theatrical experiments.

Zusammenfassung: ""At the beginning stands Wedekind." So wrote German literary critic Rudolf Kayser in 1917 of the new forms of expressionist theatre that were then becoming central to German culture. In the first decades of the twentieth century Frank Wedekind--an actor and a cabaret singer as well as a playwright--was widely acknowledged to be Germany's most important modern dramatist after Brecht (on whose work he had a considerable influence). The subject matter of his plays brazenly challenged the social mores of Wilhelmine Germany, expressing disdain for its commercialism, its social conservatism, its moral prudery, and its sexual repressiveness. In Schloss Wetterstein (Castle Wetterstein), one of his most important plays, Wedekind offers a satirical take on marriage and the bourgeois nuclear family; at the play's center is a rebellious teenage girl who turns to prostitution after her upbringing in an unstable household. The play was published in 1912, but a performance ban was put into effect immediately, and continued until after Wedekind's death. This new edition offers a fresh translation, an illuminating brief introduction, and a selection of background materials that help to set the play in context."--(Provided by publisher.)

Focusing on eighteenth-century cultural productions, Wendy Sutherland examines how representations of race in philosophy, anthropology, aesthetics, drama, and court painting influenced the construction of a white bourgeois German self. Sutherland positions her work within the framework of the transatlantic slave trade, showing that slavery, colonialism, and the triangular trade between Europe, West Africa, and the Caribbean function as the global stage on which German bourgeois dramas by Friedrich Wilhelm Ziegler, Ernst Lorenz Rathlef, and Theodor Korner (and a novella by Heinrich von Kleist on which Korner's play was based) were performed against a backdrop of philosophical and anthropological influences. Plays had an important role in educating the rising bourgeois class in morality, Sutherland argues, with fathers and daughters offered as exemplary moral figures in contrast to the depraved aristocracy. At the same time, black female protagonists in nontraditional dramas represent the boundaries of physical beauty and marriage eligibility while also complicating ideas of moral beauty embodied in the concept of the beautiful soul.0Her book offers convincing evidence that the eighteenth-century German stage grappled with the representation of blackness during the Age of Goethe, even though the German states were neither colonial powers nor direct participants in the slave trade.
