    Wie lässt sich über Geschichte schreiben, wenn diese zuverlässig nicht mehr zur Verfügung steht? Ausgehend von dieser Fragestellung untersucht der Band die Literatur der Gegenwart als jenen Schauplatz, auf dem die Konkurrenz von Fakten und Fiktion im Zeichen historischer Narration sowie im Sinne einer geschichtstheoretisch begründeten „Bruchhaftigkeit der Geschichte“ verhandelt wird. Im ersten Teil werden die Signaturen eines seit dem 18. Jahrhundert kontrovers diskutierten Geschichtsbegriffes untersucht, der die Grenze zwischen Fiktion und Historie neu auslotet. Der zweite Teil gilt der Analyse historisch-fiktionaler Texte nach 1989: Diese erzählen nicht einfach von der Geschichte, sondern reflektieren dieses Erzählen bereits. Über traditionelle narratologische Fragen hinaus erfolgt die Textlektüre vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaft und der kognitiven Psychologie, der Psychotraumatologie sowie der Medientheorie.

    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past

    "In studies of Holocaust representation and memory, scholars of literature and culture traditionally have focused on particular national contexts. At the same time, recent work has brought the Holocaust into the arena of the transnational, leading to a crossroads between localized and global understandings of Holocaust memory. Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today.     "This book uses theories of memory derived from cognitive science to offer new ways of understanding how literary works remember other literary works. Using terms derived from psychology - implicit and explicit memory, interference and forgetting - Raphael Lyne shows how works by Renaissance writers such as Wyatt, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Milton interact with their sources. The poems and plays in question are themselves sources of insight into the workings of memory, sharing and anticipating some scientific categories in the process of their thinking. Lyne proposes a way forward for cognitive approaches to literature, in which both experiments and texts are valued as contributors to interdisciplinary questions. His book will interest researchers and upper-level students of renaissance literature and drama, Shakespeare studies, memory studies, and classical reception"--

    Wie lässt sich über Geschichte schreiben, wenn diese zuverlässig nicht mehr zur Verfügung steht? Diese Frage stellt sich die Studie und untersucht die Literatur der Gegenwart als jenen Schauplatz, auf dem die Konkurrenz von Fakten und Fiktionen im Zeichen historischer Narration sowie im Sinne einer geschichtstheoretisch begründeten "Bruchhaftigkeit der Geschichte" verhandelt wird. In einem ersten Teil werden die Signaturen eines seit dem 18. Jahrhundert diskutierten und mit dem linguistic turn fraglich gewordenen Geschichtsbegriffes besprochen, der die Grenze zwischen Fiktion und Historie neu auslotet. Ein zweiter Teil gilt der Analyse historisch-fiktionaler Gegenwartstexte nach 1989, die sich ebenfalls durch eine autoreflexive Problematisierung historischer Narration auszeichnen: Sie erzählen nicht einfach von der Geschichte, sondern reflektieren dieses Erzählen bereits. Über traditionelle narratologische Fragen (Literarizität, Textualität und Narrativität der Geschichte) hinaus erfolgen die Textanalysen vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaft und der kognitiven Psychologie (Gedächtnis und Geschichte), der Psychotraumatologie (Geschichte, Literatur und Trauma) sowie der Medientheorie (Medialität der Geschichte). Die Autorin hat für ihre Arbeit den Habilitationspreis 2014 der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg erhalten.

Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today.     What and how do people remember? Who controls the process of what we call cultural or social memory? What is forgotten and why? People's memories are not the same as history written in retrospect; they are malleable and an ongoing process of construction and reconstruction. Ancient Rome provided much of the cultural framework for early Christianity, and in both the role of memory was pervasive. 'Memory in Ancient Rome and Early Christianity' presents perspectives from an international and interdisciplinary range of contributors on the literature, history, archaeology, and religion of a major world civilization, based on an informed engagement with important concepts and issues in memory studies. It offers a selective exploration of the wealth of topics which comprise memory studies, and also features a contribution from a leading neuroscientist on the actual workings of the human memory

    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past

    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past.

    Wie lässt sich über Geschichte schreiben, wenn diese zuverlässig nicht mehr zur Verfügung steht? Diese Frage stellt sich die Studie und untersucht die Literatur der Gegenwart als jenen Schauplatz, auf dem die Konkurrenz von Fakten und Fiktionen im Zeichen historischer Narration sowie im Sinne einer geschichtstheoretisch begründeten "Bruchhaftigkeit der Geschichte" verhandelt wird. In einem ersten Teil werden die Signaturen eines seit dem 18. Jahrhundert diskutierten und mit dem linguistic turn fraglich gewordenen Geschichtsbegriffes besprochen, der die Grenze zwischen Fiktion und Historie neu auslotet. Ein zweiter Teil gilt der Analyse historisch-fiktionaler Gegenwartstexte nach 1989, die sich ebenfalls durch eine autoreflexive Problematisierung historischer Narration auszeichnen: Sie erzählen nicht einfach von der Geschichte, sondern reflektieren dieses Erzählen bereits. Über traditionelle narratologische Fragen (Literarizität, Textualität und Narrativität der Geschichte) hinaus erfolgen die Textanalysen vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaft und der kognitiven Psychologie (Gedächtnis und Geschichte), der Psychotraumatologie (Geschichte, Literatur und Trauma) sowie der Medientheorie (Medialität der Geschichte). Die Autorin hat für ihre Arbeit den Habilitationspreis 2014 der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg erhalten.
