    "Since the beginning of the nineteenth century folklorists, and the general public in their wake, have assumed the orality of fairy tales. Only lately have more and more specialists been arguing in favour of at least an interdependence between oral and printed distribution of stories. This book takes an extreme position in that debate: as far as Tales of magic is concerned, the initial transmission proceded exclusively through prints. From a historical perspective, this is the only viable approach; the opposite assumption of a vast unrecorded and thus inaccessible reservoir of oral stories, presents a horror vacui. Only in the course of the nineteenth century, when folklorists started collecting in the field and asked their informants for fairy tales, was this particular genre incorporated into a then feeble oral tradition. Even then story tellers regularly reverted to printed texts. Every recorded fairy tale can be shown to be dependent on previous publications, or to be a new composition, constructed on the basis of fragments of stories already in existence. Tales of magic, tales in print traces the textual history of a number of fairy tale clusters, linking the findings of literary historians on the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries to the material collected by nineteenth- and twentieth-century field workers. While it places fairy tales as a genre firmly in a European context, it also follows particular stories in their dispersion over the rest of the world."--Publisher's website

    In 1823, Sir Henry Bunbury discovered a badly bound volume of twelve Shakespeare plays in a closet of his manor house. Nearly all of the plays were first editions, but one stood out as extraordinary: a previously unknown text of Hamlet that predated all other versions. Suddenly, the world had to grapple with a radically new—or rather, old—Hamlet in which the characters, plot, and poetry of Shakespeare's most famous play were profoundly and strangely transformed. Q1, as the text is known, has been declared a rough draft, a shorthand piracy, a memorial reconstruction, and a pre-Shakespearean "ur-Hamlet," among other things. Flickering between two historical moments—its publication in Shakespeare's early seventeenth century and its rediscovery in Bunbury's early nineteenth—Q1 is both the first and last Hamlet. Because this text became widely known only after the familiar version of the play had reached the pinnacle of English literature, its reception has entirely depended on this uncanny temporal oscillation; so too has its ongoing influence on twentieth- and twenty-first-century ideas of the play. Zachary Lesser examines how the improbable discovery of Q1 has forced readers to reconsider accepted truths about Shakespeare as an author and about the nature of Shakespeare's texts. In telling the story of this mysterious quarto and tracing the debates in newspapers, London theaters, and scholarly journals that followed its discovery, Lesser offers brilliant new insights on what we think we mean by Hamlet.

Werke wie 'Fortunatus' und 'Herzog Ernst', 'Melusine', 'Tristrant' oder 'Hug Schapler' greifen dafür auf ältere Geschichten zurück. Die vorliegende Arbeit demonstriert anhand von Handschriften und Drucken des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, wie sich dieser Prozess auf der Ebene der Textgeschichte einzelner Werke wiederholt. Denn Überlieferungsbeteiligte überarbeiten die Texte weiter, kürzen, ergänzen oder untergliedern sie und fügen mit Illustrationen und anderen Paratexten weitere Dimensionen hinzu. Ganz gleich, ob diese Eingriffe semantisch intendiert sind oder ökonomischen Logiken folgen, sie variieren den Sinngehalt der Werke und schreiben aktiv an der Literaturgeschichte mit. Sebastian Speth zeigt, wie im vormodernen Bucherzählen haupt- und paratextuelle sowie strukturelle Dimensionen miteinander konkurrieren und dem historischen Rezipienten ein Spektrum möglicher Perspektiven vorgeben, zwischen denen er bei seiner Lektüre wählen kann. Die Arbeit regt auf diese Weise an, Prosaromane "überlieferungsgerecht" zu interpretieren, das heisst, die Werke in der gleichen Ein- und Vieldeutigkeit ernst zu nehmen, in der sie überliefert sind.)"-- "Premodern narratives create a multiplicity of meaning by juxtaposing principal, paratextual, and structural dimensions.     Traditional scholarship on manuscripts has tended to focus on issues concerning their production and has shown comparatively little interest in the cultural contexts of the manuscript book. The Medieval Manuscript Book redresses this by focusing on aspects of the medieval book in its cultural situations. Written by experts in the study of the handmade book before print, this volume combines bibliographical expertise with broader insights into the theory and praxis of manuscript study in areas from bibliography to social context, linguistics to location, and archaeology to conservation. The focus of the contributions ranges widely, from authorship to miscellaneity, and from vernacularity to digital facsimiles of manuscripts. Taken as a whole, these essays make the case that to understand the manuscript book it must be analyzed in all its cultural complexity, from production to transmission to its continued adaptation

    "This volume offers a comprehensive study of all the known manuscripts and incunables of two works: the history of Alexander the Great written by Quintus Curtius Rufus, probably in the first century AD, and the translation into Latin by Lucius Septimius of the spoof history of the Trojan War, allegedly written at the time of that war by a certain Dictys Cretensis. Drawing on in excess of 200 witnesses, the analysis reveals how the text of Curtius in all our extant manuscripts descends from one damaged copy that survived from the Roman Empire into the Middle Ages, and how the text of Dictys survived in two such copies. It demonstrates that clear and decisive results can be achieved by application of the so-called stemmatic method, and how the application of those results will lead to several improvements to our standard text of Dictys. As well as determining which manuscripts future editors should use in editing these texts and examining them in detail, it also offers equally full discussion of those which will not be needed, establishing many localizations and derivations. The result is a large body of material that will help deepen our knowledge of the transmission of classical Latin texts, especially in the Renaissance, as well as our knowledge of scribal practice and of techniques that can be deployed in the genealogical study of manuscripts and incunables"--

    Die herausragende literarische Bedeutung des Parzival von Wolfram von Eschenbach zeigt sich nicht zuletzt darin, dass der Roman aus der höfischen Blütezeit noch am Ende des Mittelalters immer wieder neu abgeschrieben und sogar gedruckt wurde. Die Monographie untersucht vier Handschriften und Frühdrucke aus dieser medialen Umbruchszeit des 15. Jahrhunderts, die sich einerseits durch ihre Abhängigkeit von der frühen, noch kaum beachteten Fassung *m als bedeutsam für die Textgeschichte, andererseits durch ihre neuartigen Layoutverfahren als aussagekräftig für ihre Epoche erweisen. The outstanding literary significance of Wolfram von Eschenbach`s Parzival is due in no small part to the fact that this romance from the courtly golden age was still being repeatedly copied at the close of the Middle Ages and was even printed. The monograph examines four manuscripts and early prints from this time of transition in written media in the 15th century, on the one hand, the texts prove significant for textual history through their dependence on the early version *m, largely neglected now, and on the other, the novel layouts used are expressive of their epoch.
