    Language documentation, also often called documentary linguistics, is a relatively new subfield in linguistics which has emerged in part as a response to the pressing need for collecting, describing, and archiving material on the increasing number of endangered languages. The present book details the most recent developments in this rapidly developing field with papers written by linguists primarily based in academic institutions in North America, although many conduct their fieldwork elsewhere. The articles in this volume -- position papers and case studies -- focus on some of the most critical.

    The Oxford Handbook of Endangered Languages, in thirty-nine chapters, provides a comprehensive overview of the efforts that are being undertaken to deal with this crisis. Its purposes are (1) to provide a reasonably comprehensive reference volume, with the scope of the volume as a whole representing the breadth of the field; (2) to highlight both the range of thinking about language endangerment and the variety of responses to it; and (3) to broaden understanding of language endangerment, language documentation, and language revitalization, and, in so doing, to encourage and contribute to fresh thinking and new findings in support of endangered languages.

    Das hier vorgestellte Dissertationsvorhaben am Institut für Englische Philologie der Freien Universität Berlin möchte der Frage auf den Grund gehen, welche Veränderungen in der Sprachpolitik gegenüber bedrohten Sprachen durch die Einrichtung dezentraler Parlamente erreicht werden können. Untersucht wird die Sprachpolitik gegenüber der gälischen Sprache in Schottland sowie der samischen Sprache in Norwegen. Kern der Untersuchungen wird dabei die Frage sein, welche politischen Initiativen zur Sprachunterstützung es in den letzten Jahren gegeben hat. Insbesondere soll darauf eingegangen werden, dass es mit dem Schottischen Parlament sowie dem Sameting in Norwegen jetzt parlamentarische Vertretungen gibt, in denen die jeweilige Sprachgruppe wesentlich größeren Einfluss geltend machen kann als dies vormals der Fall war.

    Laz, a sister language of Georgian spoken on the southeastem coast of the Black Sea, is the only member of the South Caucasian family which is spoken primarily in Turkey. Due to the socio-political circumstances all Speakers of Laz living in Turkey are bilingual and use Laz primarily in private communication. Using these observations as a starting point, the paper looks at the question of whether Laz is an endangered language. In order to clarify the sociolinguistic Situation of Laz in Turkey, the different levels involved in the process of gradual language loss (language-extemal factors, speech behaviour and structural consequences within the language system) are dealt with in detail. To determine which data should be taken as basis for the documentation of the language, the paper also discusses linguistic criteria for differentiating between fully competent Speakers of Laz and Speakers who show signs of language attrition.
