    This article analyses processes of collective and individual identity formation in European travel writing from the late eighteenth and the middle of the nineteenth century and argues that these processes are based not least on the national stereotypes described and performed in the texts. I explore how the genre-specific stylistic elements of multilingualism and intertextuality inform the performance of auto- and hetero-images and in doing so suggest converging travel writing studies and imagological studies. To illustrate my thesis, I analyse travelogues by Charles Dickens and Karl Philipp Moritz.

    The fall of the Berlin Wall and its literary representations have often been described as a purely (white) German affair, as a discourse regarding (East/West) German identity. Taking on Leerssen's claim for a trans-/postnational imagology, this article provides an analysis of two novels depicting the fall of the Berlin Wall from transnational, not-(only)-German perspectives: Yadé Kara's "Selam Berlin" (2003) and Paul Beatty's "Slumberland" (2008). Comparing images and stereotypes used by both the Turkish-German narrator of Kara's and the African American narrator of Beatty's novel, it aims to undertake an exemplary case study of how imagology may be employed in contexts characterized by complex interferences of national, ethnic/racial, and urban ascriptions of belonging.

    This study compares and analyses hetero-stereotypes in Flaubert's travelogue "Voyage en Égypte" and Bachmann's prose fictions "Wüstenbuch" and "Das Buch Franza" in order to find out to what extent Flaubert resorts to stereotypical representations of the colonial Orient, and Bachmann perpetuates, transforms, or revises Flaubert's imagological discourse in the age of postcolonialism. Whereas Flaubert's sexist and racist narrative posits white superiority, Bachmann's protagonists subvert the male hegemonic stance of her French predecessor, insisting on white and male inferiority, causing just another stereotypization of race and gender.

    Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf den Stil als bislang unterkonturierte literaturwissenschaftliche Leitkategorie unter transnationalen, wissens-, gattungs- und sprachgeschichtlichen Gesichtspunkten. Im 18. Jahrhundert zeichnet sich im Nachdenken über Schreibarten eine Neujustierung der Stilkategorie ab, die den Stil zur Reflexionsgröße für ästhetische Diskurse macht. Der Band sondiert die Pluralisierung, Historisierung und Individualisierung der Stilkategorie, die ihr neue literatur- und kulturtheoretische Anwendungsbereiche eröffnet. Die Bewegungen zwischen den Sprachen, Literaturen, Medien und semantischen Feldern erschließt die Publikation, indem sie europäische Vergleichshorizonte eröffnet und literatur- ebenso wie sprachwissenschaftliche Ansätze präsentiert. Damit leistet sie einen Beitrag zum Feld der komparatistisch ausgerichteten Germanistik, insbesondere der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des 18.     Um 1750 gelangt die ethopoetische Funktion des Stils in den Fokus verschiedener Autoren, welche die Kategorie in Rhetorik, Poetik und Ästhetik neu vermessen. Johann Christoph Gottscheds Rhetorik weiß den Stil als Übung zu nutzen, um Empfinden und Denken der Schüler zu trainieren. Der Charakter der Schüler resultiert somit aus einem Ausbildungsprogramm, das vom Spracherwerb bis zum Verfassen von Reden reicht. Johann Jacob Breitinger erläutert in seiner Poetik, wie die Sprache auf einer semiotischen Ebene auf verschiedene Arten Kraft ausübt, um das Gemüt zu bewegen und damit sinnliche Erkenntnisse zu generieren. Stil als Übung und Stil als Darstellungsverfahren vereint Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten in seiner Wissenschaft der sinnlichen Erkenntnis, die sowohl eine Vervollkommnung des sinnlichen Erkennens anstrebt als auch die Verfahren beleuchtet, die für die Darstellung der sinnlichen Erkenntnis verantwortlich sind. Around 1750, the ethopoetic function of style became an important topic for various authors who reassessed the category in rhetoric, poetics and aesthetics. Johann Christoph Gottsched's Rhetoric shows how to use style as an exercise to develop the students' sensibilities and thinking. The character of the students thus results from an educational programme which ranges from the acquisition of language to the writing of speeches. In his Poetics, Johann Jacob Breitinger explains how language exerts influence in various ways on a semiotic level to move the spirit and thus generate sensate cognition. Style as an exercise and style as a process of representation are united by Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten in his science of sensate cognition, which both aims to perfect sensate cognition and illuminates the processes responsible for the representation of sensate cognition.
