    In Lyric Orientations, Hannah Vandegrift Eldridge explores the power of lyric poetry to stir the social and emotional lives of human beings in the face of the ineffable nature of our mortality. She focuses on two German-speaking masters of lyric prose and poetry: Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). While Hölderlin and Rilke are stylistically very different, each believes in the power of poetic language to orient us as social beings in contexts that otherwise can be alienating. They likewise share the conviction that such alienation cannot be overcome once and for all in any universal event. Both argue that to deny the uncertainty created by the absence of any such event (or to deny the alienation itself) is likewise to deny the particularly human condition of uncertainty and mortality. By drawing on the work of Stanley Cavell, who explores how language in all its formal aspects actually enables us to engage meaningfully with the world, Eldridge challenges poststructuralist scholarship, which stresses the limitations—even the failure—of language in the face of reality. Eldridge provides detailed readings of Hölderlin and Rilke and positions them in a broader narrative of modernity that helps make sense of their difficult and occasionally contradictory self-characterizations. Her account of the orienting and engaging capabilities of language reconciles the extraordinarily ambitious claims that Hölderlin and Rilke make for poetry—that it can create political communities, that it can change how humans relate to death, and that it can unite the sensual and intellectual components of human subjectivity—and the often difficult, fragmented, or hermetic nature of their individual poems.

Drawing on the work of Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, Luke Fischer makes a new contribution to the tradition of phenomenological poetics and expands the debate among Germanists concerning the phenomenological status of Rilke's poetry, which has been severely limited to comparisons of Rilke and Husserl. Fischer explicates an implicit phenomenology of perception in Rilke's writings from his middle period (1902-1910). He argues that Rilke cultivated an artistic perception that, in a philosophically significant manner, overcomes the opposition between the sensuous and the intelligible while simultaneously transcending the boundaries of philosophy. Fischer offers novel interpretations of central poems from Rilke's Neue Gedichte (1907) and Der neuen Gedichte anderer Teil (1908) and frames them as the ultimate articulation of Rilke's non-dualistic vision. He thus demonstrates the continuity between Rilke and phenomenology while arguing that poetry, in this case, provides the most adequate response to a philosophical problem"-- "A groundbreaking contribution to Rilke scholarship that significantly expands the existing debate concerning the relation between Rilke's poetry and phenomenological philosophy"--

In dieser Studie dient die Auseinandersetzung mit teils kanonisierten, teils vernachlässigten Texten der klassischen Moderne dem Ausloten einer als ‚visionär' zu erkennenden poetologischen Tradition, die einerseits auf Elemente einer idealistischen Erinnerungspoetik zu rekurrieren, andererseits sich erst unter den veränderten Vorzeichen neuer geschichtlicher und epochaler Zusammenhänge zu formieren scheint. Zunächst verdeckte Affinitäten zwischen Rilkes und Benjamins beim ‚Wiederleisten' der Kindheit ansetzenden Erinnerungspoetiken treten u.a. vor dem Hintergrund von Prousts einflussreicher Erinnerungstheorie zu Tage, wobei die poetologische Bedeutung von neu gelesenen bzw. in neuen Zusammenhängen gelesenen Texten interpretatorisch aufgedeckt wird. Prousts Unterscheidung zwischen ‚willkürlichem' und ‚unwillkürlichem' Erinnern erweist sich wiederum als aufschlussreich für die Beschäftigung mit Musils dichterisch wie essayistisch exerzierter Erkenntniskritik und der hieraus ableitbaren ‚visionären' Poetologie. All den hier aufgespürten Visionen ‚dichterischen Mündigwerdens' liegt ein Totalitätsanspruch zu Grunde, der, wie die Aporetik des jeweiligen Telos, der jeweiligen Losungsformel, kritisch reflektiert wird

    On the grounds of the interpretation of Rainer Maria Rilke¿s poetry and Paul Cézanne¿s paintings the book attempts to approach the work of art as a thing. This lets to overcome a one-sided aesthetical interpretation of the origin of the work of art and to indicate its place in the cosmos of uncreated, i.e. not hominized things. So, the second fundamental issue raised is a try to point out a metaphysical difference between a hominized and not hominized (natural) thing. Such a non-aesthetical point of view is called ontotopy by the author and is opposed to traditional ontology and the philosophy of art
