    Questo volume si concentra sulla nozione di attributo e di frase attributiva, un terreno particolarmente fertile per la definizione di una cesura tra l’approccio, o meglio gli approcci, presenti nella tradizione tedesca e le categorie usate in Italia e in genere fuor di Germania. Lo scavo storiografico rivela come la progressiva stratificazione di concetti e termini di "antica" ascendenza, associata a differenti tentativi di aggiornamento, abbia dato origine alla situazione odierna, in cui i livelli di analisi diversi si intersecano, si sovrappongono e fondono in soluzioni che sono talvolta di difficile lettura. La parabola di tale percorso viene qui descritta e analizzata, dagli ultimi rappresentanti della tradizione della grammaire générale nei primi decenni del XIX secolo, fino alle trasformazioni più recenti della grammatica valenziale e generativa. Da Becker a Chomsky dunque, con uno sguardo particolare alle più diffuse grammatiche contemporanee.

    In German, certain nouns (such as e.g. Versprechen ‘promise’ or Eigenart ‘characteristic’) can take a subordinate clause that can be realised either in finite form (as a dass-clause ‘that-clause’) or in non-finite form (as a zu-infinitive ‘to-infinitive’). We investigate the distribution of the two variants based on samples drawn from the German Reference Corpus (Kupietz et al. 2018) and the German web corpus DECOW16B (Schäfer & Bildhauer 2012), thus covering both conceptually written registers (as typically found in newspaper texts) and less formal registers (as typically found in internet forums). We first identify the conditions under which the two variants are interchangeable in the first place and subsequently investigate the factors that probabilistically govern speakers’ choices in variable contexts. Among other things, we test the hypotheses that the likelihood for the clause to be realised in non-finite form increases i) along with the quality of the control configuration, ii) in clauses not containing a modal verb (vs. those containing a modal verb), iv) in simple clauses (vs. complex clauses) and v) in newspaper texts (vs. internet forums).

    "Bausteine einer Korpusgrammatik des Deutschen" ist eine Schriftenreihe, die am Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim (IDS) entsteht. Sie setzt sich zum Ziel, mit korpuslinguistischen Methoden die Vielfalt und Variabilität der deutschen Grammatik in großer Detailschärfe zu erfassen und gleichzeitig für die Validierbarkeit der Ergebnisse zu sorgen. Der dritte Band enthält eine kurze Einleitung und drei als Kapitel einer neuen Grammatik gestaltete Texte: 1. Schwankungen zwischen schwacher und starker Substantivflexion, 2. Finite vs. infinite Attributsätze: zu-dass-Alternation bei Substantiven und 3. Präfix- und Partikelverben zwischen Morphologie und Syntax.

    In this paper, we investigate the temporal interpretation of propositional attitude complement clauses in four typologically unrelated languages: Washo (language isolate), Medumba (Niger-Congo), Hausa (Afro-Asiatic), and Samoan (Austronesian). Of these languages, Washo and Medumba are optional-tense languages, while Hausa and Samoan are tenseless. Just like in obligatory-tense languages, we observe variation among these languages when it comes to the availability of so-called simultaneous and backward-shifted readings of complement clauses. For our optional-tense languages, we argue that a Sequence of Tense parameter is active in these languages, just as in obligatory-tense languages. However, for completely tenseless clauses, we need something more. We argue that there is variation in the degree to which languages make recourse to res-movement, or a similar mechanism that manipulates LF structures to derive backward-shifted readings in tenseless complement clauses. We additionally appeal to cross-linguistic variation in the lexical semantics of perfective aspect to derive or block certain readings. The result is that the typological classification of a language as tensed, optionally tensed, or tenseless, does not alone determine the temporal interpretation possibilities for complement clauses. Rather, structural parameters of variation cross-cut these broad classes of languages to deliver the observed cross-linguistic picture.
