    This volume provides an exhaustive and comprehensive treatment available of the Verb Second property, a central topic in formal syntax. While Verb Second has traditionally been considered a feature primarily of the Germanic languages, this book shows that it is more widely attested cross-linguistically than previously thought, and explores the multiple empirical, theoretical, and experimental puzzles that remain in developing an account of the phenomenon. Uniquely, formal theoretical work appears alongside studies of psycholinguistics, language production, and languageacquisition. The range of languages investigated is also broader than in previous work: while novel issues are explored through the lens of the more familiar Germanic data, chapters also cover Verb Second effects in languages such as Armenian, Dinka, Tohono O'odham, and in the Celtic, Romance, and Slavonic families.

    En utilisant les méthodes de la linguistique interactionnelle, notamment de la « syntaxe en ligne », et de l’analyse conversationnelle, notre étude s’est focalisée sur les co-constructions syntaxiques en allemand parlé, qui se caractérisent par la co-construction d’une structure syntaxique par plusieurs locuteurs. L’analyse est basée sur un corpus de 199 occurrences issues de conversations quotidiennes et d’interviews informels. Premièrement, une analyse en termes de projection et rétraction a révélée la structuration syntaxique et temporelle de ce phénomène. La syntaxe s’est révélée cruciale comme ressource pour la co-construction d’un énoncé complet, mais les projections au niveau prosodique, sémantique et pragmatique sont également une ressource importante vers laquelle les locuteurs s’orientent. Nous avons également pu montrer comment les différents types de rétractions pouvaient s’expliquer d’une part par la syntaxe de la co-construction, d’autre part par ses fonctions interactionnelles. Deuxièmement, nous nous sommes focalisée sur les caractéristiques actionnelles de la séquence de co-construction. Nous discutons trois manières principales dont le receipt slot est rempli dans notre corpus: les complétions différées (affiliatives et non-affiliatives), l’acquiescement de la complétion et des nouveaux tours de parole du premier locuteur. Enfin, nous avons constaté que la complétion est une stratégie multifonctionnelle du second locuteur qui accomplit souvent une action collaborative mais qui peut également être compétitive.En somme, notre étude a montré que la structure syntaxique et séquentielle d’un phénomène spécifique de l’oral tel que les co-constructions n’est à concevoir que si on l’analyse dans son émergence temporelle. Cela nous emmène à discuter la manière dont la grammaire est exploitée pour construire des actions sociales qui sont pertinentes et reconnaissables pour les participants. ; Applying the methods of Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics, especially the methodological framework of Auer`s on-line syntax, this study focused on syntactic co-constructions in spoken German i.e. the production of one syntactic gestalt by two speakers.The study is based on a data set of 199 co-constructed syntactic completions which are taken from audio and video recordings of German everyday conversation and informal interviews. First, we present a syntactic and prosodic analysis of the co-constructed syntactic gestalts. An analysis in terms of projections and retractions revealed the syntactic and temporal organization of the co-constructed units. Syntax turned out to be a crucial resource speakers rely on in order to complete the preliminary speaker’s syntactic gestalt. However, the prosodic, semantic and pragmatic levels are also important for the second speaker to anticipate a possible completion. Furthermore, the study also showed that retractions in the second speaker’s completion can be explained by syntactic constraints and by the interactional function of the completion. Second, the analysis focused on the sequential organization of the co-constructions. We discussed three ways in which the receipt slot, i.e. the sequential position where the first speaker can accept or reject the suggested completion, can be filled: delayed completions (affiliative and non-affiliative), acknowledgment of the completion and a new turn of the first speaker. Finally the interactional functions of the co-constructions were described. The co-construction of one syntactic unit by two speakers is a multifunctional strategy which is often used to show understanding and agreement, but which can also be found in competitive contexts and can be exploited for turn-taking. Our study shows that the syntactic and sequential structure of interactional phenomena like co-constructions can only be analyzed if we consider their temporal emergence. This allows us to make a contribution to the description of how grammar is exploited to build accountable actions.

    Etymology plays a central role for Charles Olson's poetics. Based on the assumption that language precedes individual speakers and thereby always carries its long history and the traces of those who spoke it before with it, Olson's approach to it is archeological. At the same time, his work as a poet is directed towards to the future: he writes at the avant-gardist Black Mountain College and demands a new American poetry, designated as "projective verse". Conjoining these two temporal directions, Olson claims "I am an archeologist of morning". One way of paving the way for a 'poetry of morning' is uncovering the origins of words and going back to their etymological roots. Thereby, it is important to note that Olson's etymologies are mostly faulty or simplified. Often, they turn out to be quotes he found in other works. By integrating the fishy etymologies in his own writing and handling them creatively, Olson endows the words' supposed history with something new and readers who trace the wrong etymological tracks are encouraged to capture an immediate impetus of language in action. Thus, Olson's 'etymons' go hand in hand with the poetological implications of projective verse.

    Mehrsprachige Schreibkompetenz rückt in den letzten Jahren aufgrund zunehmender Internationalisierung von Studium, Lehre und Forschung verstärkt in den Fokus. Dieser Band betrachtet akademisches Schreiben in verschiedenen Sprachen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, um die Lehre wissenschaftlichen Schreibens in mehrsprachigen Umgebungen zu bereichern. Das Buch enthält Studien zur Schreibpraxis mehrsprachiger Schreibender, sprachvergleichende Untersuchungen wissenschaftlicher Texte und diskutiert innovative Ansätze zur Lehre mehrsprachigen Schreibens an der Universität. Zusätzlich bietet der Band eine gute Übersicht zum aktuellen Stand mehrsprachiger wissenschaftlicher Schreibforschung an und diskutiert bestehende Anforderungen an zukünftige Forschung.     In meinem Beitrag geht es um ein für Sprachpraktiker sehr relevantes Thema, das aber auch von geradezu philosophischem Interesse ist: Kann es echte oder natürliche Kommunikation im Fremdsprachunterricht geben oder handelt es sich hier um eine Chimäre, die von Sprachlehrern vergeblich angestrebt wird? Ich werde mich in der Beantwortung der Frage auf mündliche Kommunikation beschränken, dabei aber sowohl Produktion als auch Rezeption einbeziehen. Meine Ausführungen stützen sich auf Diskussionen in English Language Teaching (EFL) und Applied Linguistics, insbesondere die Argumentationen von Paul Seedhouse (1996, 1999) und Alex Gilmore (2004).

    The language, and especially vocabulary, reflects very precise changes taking place in extralinguistic provinces. This article demonstrates the development of masculine names of persons and jobs which until now have been reserved for women, hence in the maternity and education field, comparative - in Polish and German. First, the article presents the systemic possibilities of both languages to mark the gender or gender neutrality. Then, on chosen examples found on Internet forums, it demonstrates how nowadays they are realized in "parole".

    Sieht man neuere Grammatiken des Deutschen daraufhin durch, wie die Masse der Verben bezüglich ihres semantischen Gehalts klassifiziert wird, stellt sich bald heraus, daß hier kein Konsens besteht. Die DUDEN-Grammatik beispielsweise unterscheidet Bedeutungsgruppen: Tätigkeitsverben (mit der Untergruppe Handlungsverben), Vorgangsverben und Zustandsverben, BRINKMANN fügt diesen drei Klassen die Geschehensverben und die Witterungsverben hinzu; RENICKE gliedert die Verben in 2 Klassen Punktuelle Verben und Ausdehnungsverben. FLÄMIG schlägt semantische Subklassifizierungen unter drei verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten vor: hinsichtlich des Anteils der Verben "an der komplexen Geschehens-/Seinsbezeichnung", hinsichtlich "der Verlaufsweise eines Geschehens" und hinsichtlich "der Charakteristik eines Geschehens/Seins in bezug auf entsprechende Sachverhalte", die letztere Klassifikation unterscheidet Handlungsverben, Tätigkeitsverben, Vorgangsverben, Ereignisverben und Zustandsverben. [...] Eine semantische Analyse der Fortbewegungsverben des Althochdeutschen liegt meines wissens nicht vor, stellt also eine reizvolle Aufgabe dar, zu deren Lösung hier erste Schritte unternommen werden sollen.

    Bei der Untersuchung der bulgarischen Geschmacksadjektive werden wir versuchen, ihre distinktiven Merkmale festzustellen, die die systematischen Beziehungen zwischen den betrachteten Spracheinheiten charakterisieren. Wie bekannt, unterscheidet MELČUK zwischen äußeren und inneren distinktiven Merkmalen. Die äußeren Merkmale drücken die syntagmatischen Beziehungen der Sprachelemente aus; auf der lexikalischen Ebene z.B. müssen sie die Kombinierbarkeit – im konstruktiven Sinne – der Worte im Syntagma erklären: d.h., welche konkreten Verbindungen kann man konstruieren, abgesehen von ihrer Akzeptierbarkeit, wenn der Sinn als äußeres distinktives Merkmal ("semantischer Parameter") angegeben ist. Da diese Merkmale sehr allgemein sein müssen (im Unterschied zu den individuellen semantischen Parametern, die in wenigen Verbindungen vorkommen), ist es klar, daß nicht alle semantischen Merkmale; die ein begrenztes Gebiet. wie das der Geschmacksadjektive charakterisieren, als semantische Parameter dienen können, sondern nur das allgemeinste Merkmal. [...] Mit dem Ziel, eine semantische Interpretation der generierten Sätze zu ermöglichen, werden wir versuchen, die semantischen Merkmale in der normalen Form der lexikalischen Eintragung (nach Katz/Fodor) darzustellen, was auch die Möglichkeit gibt, einige semantische Verhältnisse der Sätze, die Geschmacksadjektive enthalten, zu erklären. Da das Ziel hier die Feststellung der für die semantische Interpretation notwendigen Merkmale ist, werden wir nicht alle Bedeutungen der Geschmacksadjektive suchen; außer Betracht bleibt auch ihr übertragener Gebrauch, weil sie dann eigentlich keine echten Geschmacksadjektive mehr sind.
