Patients with suspected coronary artery disease often undergo coronary angiography without prior non-invasive functional stress testing, mainly because of logistic reasons, shortcomings of the non-invasive tests, and a more widespread confidence in invasive techniques. The availability in the catheterization laboratory of the pressure-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR) has provided the interventional cardiologist with the ideal tool for appropriate decision-making based on the functional significance of the coronary stenosis detected at the angiogram. In fact, FFR allows a more refined and individualized understanding of the true severity of coronary artery disease, and, therefore, a more appropriate selection of the epicardial lesions to be treated, especially in patients with dubious lesions and complex disease. A clinical decision-making based on coronary pressure measurement results in a more effective strategy than placing stents on a "trial and error" basis. This is particularly true in case of drug-eluting stents where an approach based on an indiscriminate multi-stenting will annihilate the benefits of these new stents and be unacceptably expensive. In addition, many angiographically mild stenoses happen to be hemodynamically significant and, therefore, deserve revascularization, especially in the drug-eluting stent era.

We aimed to validate the technique of measuring the coronary flow reserve (CFR) with coronary pressure measurements against an established thermodilution technique. The CFR has traditionally required measurement of coronary blood flow velocity with the Doppler wire and, more recently, using a thermodilution technique with the coronary pressure wire. However, recent work has suggested that the CFR may be derived from pressure measurements alone (the ratio of the square root of the pressure drop across an epicardial stenosis during hyperemia to that value at rest). This depends on the assumption that friction losses across a coronary stenosis are negligible. We compared pressure-derived CFR values with those obtained by the thermodilution technique using the intracoronary pressure wire in 38 stenoses in 34 patients with significant coronary stenoses undergoing percutaneous intervention. We also compared these two techniques of measuring CFR in 25 stenoses (6 vessels) artificially created by inflating small balloons within a stented coronary artery after percutaneous intervention. There is a close linear relationship between pressure-derived and thermodilution CFR in native (r 2 = 0.52; p < 0.001) and artificial stenoses (r 2 = 0.54; p < 0.05), although the pressure-derived technique appears to systematically underestimate CFR values in both situations. This applies to native and artificial stenoses. Coronary flow reserve cannot be measured merely with pressure alone, and it cannot be safely assumed that friction losses are negligible across a native coronary stenosis. These data suggest that friction loss is an important determinant of the pressure gradient along an atherosclerotic coronary artery. © 2005 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

One of the specific historical and cultural characteristics of the Russian political discourse is its orientation to precedents. It is considered correct to follow the behaviouristic models shown by one of the “heroes” (Peter I, Lenin, Stalin, etc.), to reproduce standard texts, and to compare the present situations with past situations (The Time of Troubles, Weimar Republic, NEP “New Economic Policy” (1921-1928), etc.). One of the peculiarities of the present time in Russia is the deep conflict between different social groups orientated to different precedents. Each group has its own variant of the national myth using the same means of the language for actualisation of this myth. Therefore, it is very important to analyse changes in the national cognitive foundation. Precedential phenomena are the central components of this foundation.

In his paper, "The Canonization of German-language Digital Literature," Florian Hartling discusses "Net Literature," a relatively young phenomenon, that has its roots in experimental visual and concrete poetry and hypertext. With the use of new media technology, this new genre of literature has acquired much interest and is now considered to be one of the most important influences in contemporary art. Not only does Net Literature connect sound, video, and animation with interactivity and allows new forms of artistic expression, it also impacts significantly on the traditional functions of the literary system. Hartling suggests that, in relation to Net Literature, the notion of the "death of the author" gives birth to the "writing reader." Hartling presents the results of his study where he applies the concept of "canon" to German-language Net Literature and where he attempts to find out whether, in this new form of literature, a "canon" has already been formed. Based on Karl Erik Rosengren's framework of "mention technique," a sample of Germanlanguage reviews of Net Literature was analyzed. The study intends to test the applicability of Rosengren's method to the analysis of Net Literature, that is, whether it is valid to use a method that was originally developed for the empirical study of the traditional literary canon for the study of an emergent Net Literature.

While Information State (IS) based techniques show promise in the construction of flexible, knowledgebased dialogue systems, the many declarative rules that are used to encode Dialogue Theories often lead to opaque systems that are difficult to test and potentially unintuitive to users. In this paper, we advocate the application of explicitly defined Generic Dialogue Models (GDMs), encoded as recursive transition networks (RTNs), to the structuring of information state-based dialogue managers. To this end, we review the state of GDM approaches, comparing and contrasting them against the Dialogue Theories which are typically implemented using information state approaches. Furthermore, to support our approach, we present an extension of the ALPHA (A Language for Programming Hybrid Agents) language, which has been enhanced to support information state and GDM concepts directly.

In shared-control systems, such as intelligent service robots, a human operator and an automated technical system are interdependently in charge of control. Natural Language dialogues have long been acknowledged as a potentially fruitful modality for instructing, describing and negotiating in human-machine interfaces. Since shared-control systems are often embedded in safety-critical devices, formal methods are thus widely used for improving the quality of such systems. In this paper, we present a formal method based approach for dialogue management and show how it enhances the clarity of dialog modelling, provides several engineering properties (e.g., validation, test and simulation) and supports the generation of clarification subdialogues.

We report on the role of well-formed conceptual and linguistic ontologies in empirically grounded `spoken dialogue systems' (SDS). In particular we use empirical results from spatial dialogues in German to argue for the strict separation of linguistically motivated knowledge from non-linguistic, domain concerns. We motivate our arguments with a number of examples relevant to the language generation task, and show how a well-defined separation of linguistic and domain concerns can be effected in a practical SDS.

One of the most robust findings of studies of human-human dialogue is that people adapt their utterances to their conversational partners. However, spoken language generators are limited in their ability to adapt to individual users. While statistical models of language generation have the potential for individual adaptation, we know of no experiments showing this. In this paper, we utilize one statistical method, boosting, to train a spoken language generator for individual users. We show that individualized models perform better than models based on sets of users, and describe differences in the learned individual models arising from the linguistic preferences of users.

Computer-based interviewing systems could use models of respondent disfluency behaviors to predict a need for clarification of terms in survey questions. We compare simulated speech interfaces that use two such models - a generic model and a stereotyped model that distinguishes between the speech of younger and older speakers - to several non-modeling speech interfaces in a task where respondents provided answers to survey questions from fictional scenarios. Our modeling procedure found that the best predictor of conceptual misalignment was a critical Goldilocks range for response latency, outside of which responses are more likely to be conceptually misaligned. Different Goldilocks ranges are effective for younger and older speakers.

We are developing an ECA (Embodied Communicational Agent) system in Hungarian language. The ECA has to be able to carry out general chat conversations and domain specific discussions as well. The structure of the dialogue graph and the attributes of the graph nodes have to support the success of the conversation: user utterance understanding and responding, as well as repairing the 'non-understandins' situations. In the following sections we are briefly depicting the system and describe its dialogue knowledge base focusing on the different user interfaces we developed for its testing and building.

This work investigates laryngeal and supralaryngeal correlates of the voicing contrast in alveolar obstruent production in German. It further studies laryngealoral co-ordination observed for such productions. Three different positions of the obstruents are taken into account: the stressed, syllable initial position, the post-stressed intervocalic position, and the post-stressed word final position. For the latter the phonological rule of final devoicing applies in German. The different positions are chosen in order to study the following hypotheses: 1. The presence/absence of glottal opening is not a consistent correlate of the voicing contrast in German. 2. Supralaryngeal correlates are also involved in the contrast. 3. Supralaryngeal correlates can compensate for the lack of distinction in laryngeal adjustment. Including the word final position is motivated by the question whether neutralization in word final position would be complete or whether some articulatory residue of the contrast can be found. Two experiments are carried out. The first experiment investigates glottal abduction in co-ordination with tongue-palate contact patterns by means of simultaneous recordings of transillumination, fiberoptic films and Electropalatography (EPG). The second experiment focuses on supralaryngeal correlates of alveolar stops studied by means of Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) simultaneously with EPG. Three German native speakers participated in both recordings. Results of this study provide evidence that the first hypothesis holds true for alveolar stops when different positions are taken into account. In fricative production it is also confirmed since voiceless and voiced fricatives are most of the time realised with glottal abduction. Additionally, supralaryngeal correlates are involved in the voicing contrast under two perspectives. First, laryngeal and supralaryngeal movements are well synchronised in voiceless obstruent production, particularly in the stressed position. Second, supralaryngeal correlates occur ...

The dialects of modern Low Saxon dispose of multiple nominal constructions to express possession. The noun phrases in (1) – (4) exemplify these four different constructions. (1) sien Huus his house "his house" (2) Anna ehr Huus Anna her house "Anna's house" (3) Oma's Huus grandma=POSS house "grandma's house" (4) dat Huus vun de CDU the house of the CDU "the house of the Christian Democrats" After establishing these four constructions as a case of syntactic alternation using authentic examples taken from a one million word corpus of Low Saxon texts, I discuss the role of animacy in the domain of nominal possessive constructions. I examine animacy per se and several additional factors that have been connected to animacy in the literature such as concreteness, person, and number. Moreover, I also take a look at the possessive relation between possessor and possessum and discuss how it is connected to animacy. My research shows that animacy plays a very important role for the choice of possessive construction in Low Saxon and that the animacy level of the possessor is much more important than the animacy level of the possessum. The three prenominal constructions (1) – (3) in which the possessor phrase precedes the possessum phrase are generally used with more animate possessors than the postnominal construction in (4). This is in line with the few comments on these constructions given in descriptive grammars on Low Saxon, e.g. Saltveit (1983), and with results of previous studies on the possessive alternation in English (eg. Leech et al. 1994 and Rosenbach 2002). The fact that the prenominal possessive constructions in (1) – (3) pattern more closely together than each does with the postnominal possessive construction in (4) lends further support to Rosenbach's theory for English that the influence of animacy on the choice of possessive construction is based on the different linear order of possessor and possessum. However, I will also show that there are some differences between the prenominal constructions ...

One major issue in the accomplishment of contrasts in conversation is lexical choice of items which carry the semantic Ioad of the two states of affair which are represented as being opposed to one another. These items or expressions are co-selected to be understood as being contrastively related to each other. In this paper, it is argued that the activity of contrasting itself provides them with a specific local opposite meaning which they would not obtain in other contexts. Practices of contrastingare thus seen as an example of conversational activities which creatively and systematically affect situated meanings. Basedon data from various genres, such as meetings, mediation sessions and conversations, the paper discusses two practices of contrasting, their sequential construction and their interpretative effects. It is concluded that the interpretative effects of conversational contrasting rest on the sequential deployment oflinguistic resources and on the cognitive procedures of frame-based interpretation and constructing a maximally contrastive interpretation for the co-selected expressions.
