    This book advocates for a new analytical framework that extends our understanding of multimodal meaning-making in the novel. Integrating theoretical traditions from stylistics and the social semiotic approach to multimodal communication developed by Kress and van Leeuwen, Nørgaard applies this method of analysis in order to build on existing stylistic practices that look at linguistic features, such as lexis and grammar, in the novel to encompass other semiotic modes found in the form, such as color, layout, typography, and images. The volume grounds the discussion with supporting examples from novels that feature multi-layered semiotic forms but also traditional novels as well, furthering the argument that all novels are inherently multimodal. Offering new insights and tools for analysis for unpacking multimodal meaning-making in this critical literary genre, this volume is an indispensable resource for graduate students and researchers in multimodality, stylistics, and literary studies

    Es werden ausgewählte Aspekte von Negation und Interrogation sowie deren Interrelation behandelt. Nach einer vergleichenden Untersuchung der lexikalischen Negation im Deutschen, Serbischen und Türkischen, die eine Reihe von neuen Erkenntnissen zu in allen drei Sprachen produktiven Verfahren erbringt, wird die Stellung des Negators ebenfalls sowohl für das Deutsche als auch sprachübergreifend behandelt. Für die Analyse der universellen Strukturen des Zusammenwirkens von Negation und Interrogation werden Beschreibungsansätze zum Status von Satzmodi diskutiert und weiterentwickelt sowie eine empirische Basis zugrundegelegt, die insgesamt 52 Sprachen umfaßt. The volume looks into selected aspects of negation and interrogation and the way they interrelate. After a comparative investigation of negation in German, Serbian and Turkish offering a number of new insights on mechanisms operative in all three languages, the position of the negator is discussed with reference to German and to languages generally. With reference to the analysis of universal interactive structures between negation and interrogation, the author discusses and elaborates on various descriptive approaches to the status of sentence modes, also providing empirical material culled from a total of 52 different languages.

Covert Modality is modality which we interpret but which is not associated with any lexical item in the structure that we are interpreting. This dissertation investigates a class of environments that involves covert modality. Examples of covert modality include wh-infinitival complements, infinitival relative clauses, purpose clauses, the 'have to' construction, and the 'is to' construction (cf. 1): 1a. Tim knows [how to solve the problem]. (""Tim knows how one/he could/should solve the problem."") 1b. Jane found [a book to draw cartoons in] for Sara. (""Jane found a book for Sara one could/should draw cartoons in."") 1c. [The man to fix the sink] is here. (""The man whose purpose is to fix the sink is here."") 1d. Sue went to Torino [to buy a violin]. (""Sue went to Torino so that she could buy a violin."") 1e. Bill has to reach Philadelphia before noon. (""Bill must reach Philadelphia before noon."") 1f. Will is to leave tomorrow. (""Will is scheduled/supposed to leave tomorrow."") The interpretation of (1a-f) involves modality, however, there is no lexical item that seems to be the source of the modality. What (1a-f) have in common is that they involve infinitivals. This book addresses the following questions about covert modality: what is the source of this modality, what are its semantic properties, why are some but not all infinitival relatives modal, and why are all infinitival questions modal? The infinitival [+wh] Complementizer is identified as the source of the covert modality. The apparent variability of the force of this modality is related to the particular semantics of this Complementizer. Infinitival relatives that receive a non-modal interpretation are analyzed as being reduced relatives and thus not involving the infinitival [+wh] Complementizer.     Es werden ausgewählte Aspekte von Negation und Interrogation sowie deren Interrelation behandelt. Nach einer vergleichenden Untersuchung der lexikalischen Negation im Deutschen, Serbischen und Türkischen, die eine Reihe von neuen Erkenntnissen zu in allen drei Sprachen produktiven Verfahren erbringt, wird die Stellung des Negators ebenfalls sowohl für das Deutsche als auch sprachübergreifend behandelt. Für die Analyse der universellen Strukturen des Zusammenwirkens von Negation und Interrogation werden Beschreibungsansätze zum Status von Satzmodi diskutiert und weiterentwickelt sowie eine empirische Basis zugrundegelegt, die insgesamt 52 Sprachen umfaßt. The volume looks into selected aspects of negation and interrogation and the way they interrelate. After a comparative investigation of negation in German, Serbian and Turkish offering a number of new insights on mechanisms operative in all three languages, the position of the negator is discussed with reference to German and to languages generally. With reference to the analysis of universal interactive structures between negation and interrogation, the author discusses and elaborates on various descriptive approaches to the status of sentence modes, also providing empirical material culled from a total of 52 different languages.

"An important idea in generative grammar is that form does not always follow function; that is, not all syntactic behavior is explainable by appeal to semantic considerations. But some syntactic behavior is so explainable, and surely it is no accident that many of the verbs and adjectives we use for describing our mental lives have the ability to embed sentences or sentence-like constituents: it is emblematic of what philosophers of mind call intentionality, which is the capacity of the mind to represent mind-external objects. Beliefs and desires, for example, have objects, and often those objects are of the sort that we can use sentences to name or describe them. Perhaps not all of the mental states and actions described by the words in (1) work like this in every situation. Maybe, for example, I can have "undirected" anger (ultimately, this is a question for psychologists or philosophers, not linguists). But I can also be angry about something or angry that something is the case"--

Covert Modality is modality which we interpret but which is not associated with any lexical item in the structure that we are interpreting. This dissertation investigates a class of environments that involves covert modality. Examples of covert modality include wh-infinitival complements, infinitival relative clauses, purpose clauses, the 'have to' construction, and the 'is to' construction (cf. 1): 1a. Tim knows [how to solve the problem]. (""Tim knows how one/he could/should solve the problem."") 1b. Jane found [a book to draw cartoons in] for Sara. (""Jane found a book for Sara one could/should draw cartoons in."") 1c. [The man to fix the sink] is here. (""The man whose purpose is to fix the sink is here."") 1d. Sue went to Torino [to buy a violin]. (""Sue went to Torino so that she could buy a violin."") 1e. Bill has to reach Philadelphia before noon. (""Bill must reach Philadelphia before noon."") 1f. Will is to leave tomorrow. (""Will is scheduled/supposed to leave tomorrow."") The interpretation of (1a-f) involves modality, however, there is no lexical item that seems to be the source of the modality. What (1a-f) have in common is that they involve infinitivals. This book addresses the following questions about covert modality: what is the source of this modality, what are its semantic properties, why are some but not all infinitival relatives modal, and why are all infinitival questions modal? The infinitival [+wh] Complementizer is identified as the source of the covert modality. The apparent variability of the force of this modality is related to the particular semantics of this Complementizer. Infinitival relatives that receive a non-modal interpretation are analyzed as being reduced relatives and thus not involving the infinitival [+wh] Complementizer.
