    Medieval Europe was characterized by a sophisticated market for the production, exchange and sale of written texts. This volume brings together papers on a range of topics, centred on manuscript studies and textual criticism, which explore these issues from a pan-European perspective. They examine the prolonged and varied processes through which Europe's different parts entered into modern reading, writing and communicative practices, drawing on a range of approaches and perspectives; they consider material culture, multilingualism in texts and books, book history, readers, audience and scribes across the Middle Ages. La deuxième partie analyse la production par catégorie. Quel que soit le type d'imprimés, le rythme de la croissance en titres et en pages s'accélère à partir des années 1770.     Het gedrukte boek staat op een keerpunt. Achter ons liggen ruim vijf eeuwen waarin drukkers, uitgevers en boekverkopers activiteiten ontplooiden om te voldoen aan de steeds groeiende vraag aan boeken in alle soorten en maten. Voor ons ligt een ongewisse toekomst waarin zal moeten blijken of het boek zich zal handhaven naast internet en andere media. In dit boek behandelt Marieke van Delft beide tijdvakken vanuit haar werk als conservator bij de Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag. Het eerste deel gaat over de ontwikkeling van het gedrukte boek in Nederland. Het begint met de overgang van handschrift naar druk rond 1500. Vervolgens wordt de samenwerking en rolverdeling in het boekbedrijf op de grens van de zestiende en de zeventiende eeuw belicht. Het laatste hoofdstuk van het eerste deel toont de aandacht voor het bijzondere boek te midden van alle industriële ontwikkelingen rond 1900 aan de hand van een genootschap van liefhebbers.

    Das Buch stellt die Situation des Schriftstellers im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland (1933-1945) dar. Der Verfasser schildert insbesondere den fortschreitenden Prozess der Unterdrückung der künstlerischen Autonomie durch die Organe des totalitären Staates und der NSDAP, die wachsende Überwachung der privaten Sphäre, den Terror, die Vergewaltigung der Gewissensfreiheit und die Dehumanisierung des literarischen Alltags. Das Buch zeichnet sich durch eine systematische Struktur aus. Der Verfasser konzentriert sich zunächst auf die 1933 bestehenden literarischen Institutionen und schriftstellerischen Organisationen und zeigt deren Vereinnahmung durch das NS-Regime, was zur Demontage, Umgestaltung bzw. Auflösung führte. Das erfolgte nicht nur durch die Eingriffe der neuen Macht, sondern auch infolge von Initiativen dieser literarischen Kreise, die sich entweder angesichts des Terrors „freiwillig“ selbst gleichschalteten oder mit der „nationalen Revolution“ identifizierten. Auf Betreiben von Staat und Partei schuf man in den Jahren 1933-1935 ein System von Institutionen, deren Aufgabe eine totale Kontrolle und Steuerung des deutschen literarischen Marktes war. Das Buch zeigt, wie dieses System funktionierte und sich im Laufe der Jahre vervollkommnete. Den Höhepunkt der Entwicklung erreichte es in den Jahren des Krieges, was aber mit dem Zusammenbruch des literarischen Marktes und einem fast gänzlichen Erstarren des literarischen Lebens in den Jahren des „totalen Krieges“ zusammenfiel. Ein Sonderthema widmet sich dem Schicksal der Schriftsteller jüdischer Abstammung. Durch die antisemitischen Maßnahmen des nationalsozialistischen Staates wurden Juden im Jahr 1935 von der Teilnahme am literarischen Leben ausgeschlossen. Ende 1938 wurde ihnen der Zugang zu kulturellen Veranstaltungen und Institutionen gänzlich untersagt.

This study examines the German-language book trade in the English capital and shows that it had a major impact on the London book trade and on cultural exchange between Germany and England. Bringing together 19 detailed case studies, this volume considers and reconstructs the characteristics of specialist book production in the early modern period. In particular it explores the motives that led to specialisation ranging from the desire for profit on the part of risk-taking, entrepreneurial individuals or family firms to the more propagandist or missionising aims of corporate groups who subsidised production, often without regard for profit. The book also explores the economic and personal pressures and perils that accompanied specialist production, which was often a risk-laden enterprise that could end in financial and social ruin
