Cette étude traite du développement littéraire du personnage de Brünhild au Moyen Âge. Elle analyse tout d’abord de manière théorique la méthode – la Philologie rationnelle – pour l’appliquer par la suite aux textes. Cette méthode tente de suivre le chemin de l’écrit au détriment d’une hypothétique transmission orale. L’étude se penche tout d’abord sur le traitement de la figure de Brunichildis, reine des Francs qui vécut au VIe siècle, dans les textes latins. Cette partie est suivie d’une interprétation du développement du personnage dans la Chanson des Nibelungen et la Plainte. L’analyse se poursuit par deux branches distinctes : une norvégienne et suédoise qui représente Brünhild sous les traits d’une marchande de chevaux dans la Saga de Thidrek et la Chronique de Didrik. L’autre branche islandaise représentée par l’Edda de Snorri, l’Edda poétique et la Saga des Völsungs lui confère le rôle d’une valkyrie. ; This study deals with the literary development of the character Brünhild in the Middle Ages. It first analyzes theoretically the method – the Rational philology – and then applies it to the texts. This method attempts to follow the path of the written transmission instead of resorting to the assumption of an oral one. The study first looks at the evolution of the treatment of the figure Brunichildis, the queen of the Franks who lived in the 6th century, in the Latin texts. This part is followed by an interpretation of the development of this figure in the Song of the Nibelungs and the Complaint. The analysis continues with two distinct branches: a Norwegian and a Swedish one which represents Brünhild as a horse seller in the Saga of Thidrek and the Chronicle of Didrik.The other Icelandic branch represented by Snorri's Edda, the Poetic Edda and Saga of the Völsungs gives her the role of a Valkyrie.
