    In 1700 the construction of a new royal palace in Stockholm was under way. At the behest of the Swedish king, the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger invited French artists and artisans to come to Stockholm to work on the interiors. Largely completed in 1703, the gallery in the state apartment celebrates the reign of King Charles XI (r. 1660?1697). It tells us not only about the transfer of artistic practices but also about the propagandistic force of Louis XIV's absolute rule. The articles discuss the Swedish background, iconography of Jacques Foucquet's paintings and the meaning of Latin sentences, international context and models, technical aspects and organization of labour and the interpretation, meaning and function of the gallery. The 17 essays in this rich illustrated volume are based on presentations given at an interdisciplinary symposium in Stockholm

Many of the featured artists were court painters under sovereigns whose tastes influenced the art world of the 16th and 17th centuries. The superb selection of twenty-eight paintings includes works by Jan Breughel, Guercino, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, and Diego Velázquez. Included is Titian's Reclining Venus with Cupid and a Musician, probably painted by the artist for Charles V, and several works by Rubens, who painted a considerable number of works for the Spanish court. Informative catalogue entries accompany an essay by Javier Portús on the Spanish royal taste in collecting and the role of painting within European politics of the day and a contemporary response to understanding the nude in Renaissance and Baroque painting by Jill Burke."--

    We are active with our mobile devices; we play games, watch films, listen to music, check social media, and tap screens and keyboards while we are on the move. In Mood and Mobility, Richard Coyne argues that not only do we communicate, process information, and entertain ourselves through devices and social media; we also receive, modify, intensify, and transmit moods. Designers, practitioners, educators, researchers, and users should pay more attention to the moods created around our smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Drawing on research from a range of disciplines, including experimental psychology, phenomenology, cultural theory, and architecture, Coyne shows that users of social media are not simply passive receivers of moods; they are complicit in making moods. Devoting each chapter to a particular mood -- from curiosity and pleasure to anxiety and melancholy -- Coyne shows that devices and technologies do affect people's moods, although not always directly. He shows that mood effects are transitional; different moods suit different occasions, and derive character from emotional shifts. Furthermore, moods are active; we enlist all the resources of human sociability to create moods. And finally, the discourse about mood is deeply reflexive; in a kind of meta-moodiness, we talk about our moods and have feelings about them. Mood, in Coyne's distinctive telling, provides a new way to look at the ever-changing world of ubiquitous digital technologies.
