    The purpose of this paper is to compare two prologs, namely 'Prolog im Himmel' in "Faust I" and the prolog in "Der gute Mensch von Sezuan" by Brecht. The comparative analysis of the two texts provides evidence to state that Brecht produces a parody of Goethe's prolog. This procedure is interpreted here as a feature of 20th century literature. Intertextuality and recreation are seen as a way to characterize a shapeless present and are approached by drawing an analogy and critically comparing and contrasting Brecht's prolog to a literary masterpiece. O propósito desse trabalho é tecer um paralelo entre os prólogos do "Faust I", o "prólogo no céu" de Goethe e o prólogo da peça de Brecht "Der gute Mensch von Sezuan". A análise comparativa dos dois textos oferece subsídios para se afirmar que Brecht cria uma paródia do prólogo goethiano, procedimento que será interpretado como uma das características da literatura do século XX. Tal recurso de intertextualidade e de recriação será visto como uma forma de caracterizar o presente amorfo a partir do confronto e da analogia, com visão crítica, de uma obra consagrada da tradição.

    "Der Fall Maurizius" by Jakob Wassermann was first published in 1928. It is set partly in 1908 Germany and partly during the Weimar Republic. In this work, Wassermann criticizes German pragmatism by depicting the State bureaucracy as the absolute power over citizens, even after the Imperial Era. Disgusted with the mismanagement of the justice system and with the perverse character of those in charge, the author renders German pragmatism as non-adherence to the moral values supposedly justifying the State apparatus – in particular, as a breach of the "Gerechtigkeit" principle. The harmless innocence of the adolescent Etzel von Andergast, the only child of a well-known prosecutor, highlights this violation of justice. At the same time, Waremme is a sinister character whose Jewish parents fled from Prussian-occupied Poland. He breaks with his ancestors' moral values and is eager to play a key role in the German Nationalistic movement. However, he feels frustrated with his project of cultural assimilation and is pushed towards the outskirts of a bewildered society. The crisis of values and transgression of justice become the emblems of Wassermann’s generation. Em "Der Fall Maurizius", romance de Jakob Wassermann de 1928, parcialmente ambientado em 1908, à época da República de Weimar, o autor critica o pragmatismo alemão, apoiado numa burocracia de estado que, mesmo depois do fim do Império, continua a exercer o poder de maneira absoluta. Wassermann revolta-se contra a má administração da justiça, e contra o caráter perverso daqueles que, tendo se apoderado do aparelho estatal, arrogam a si mesmos o papel de representantes dos melhores princípios do humanismo alemão. O pragmatismo, assim, apresenta-se como a falsificação daqueles valores que supostamente o legitimariam – notadamente, do princípio de Justiça, "Gerechtigkeit". A inocência de um adolescente, Etzel von Andergast, filho de um grande promotor, é o que traz à luz este estado de adulteração. Ao mesmo tempo, a figura de Waremme, descendente de judeus provenientes de regiões da Polônia ocupadas pela Prússia desde 1772, é uma figura sinistra, que rompeu com o legado ético de seus antepassados, pretendendo exercer um papel de destaque no movimento nacionalista alemão, para frustrar-se e ocupar posição marginal numa sociedade repleta de desencaminhados e perplexos. Desta forma o autor representa as aporias de uma geração que sente na pele esse exílio da justiça e a crise generalizada de valores.

    "The Student from Prague" (1913) is considered to be the first film d’art produced in Germany. The film is based on a script by Hanns Heinz Ewers, writer and ardent advocate of this new medium. With roots in German romanticism, particularly in regard to motifs in the works by E.T.A. Hoffmann and Adelbert von Chamisso, "The Student from Prague" explored the optical possibilities offered by the doppelganger character. This literary framework supports the plot, gives credibility to the movie and contributes to the acceptance of films as an art medium. It also marks the rise of German cinema on an international level, which reached its peak in the 1920s with the movement known as 'German expressionism'. "O estudante de Praga" (1913) é considerado o primeiro filme de arte produzido na Alemanha. Baseado num roteiro de Hanns Heinz Ewers, escritor e defensor destacado do novo medium fílmico, o filme remonta a motivos da tradição literária do romantismo alemão, sobretudo em relação às obras de E.T.A. Hoffmann e Adelbert von Chamisso e à figura do doppelgänger. Todo esse arcabouço literário não só dava sustentação à trama como também credibilidade ao filme, contribuindo, junto com a exploração dos recursos técnicos de câmera, para a aceitação definitiva do filme como medium de arte, bem como para o início do sucesso do cinema alemão, que atingiria seu apogeu nos anos 1920, com o movimento conhecido como 'expressionismo alemão'.

    This paper examines the novel "Die Lehrlinge zu Sais" by Novalis and aims to identify features of a language theory which is based on German Idealism. For Novalis, who has witnessed the establishment of modern linguistics and was himself a reputed researcher on philology, language reflects a potential relation between spirit and world. This suggestion is the opposite of today's classic concept of the arbitrariness of signs. Considered by critics as unfinished, this novel contains a rich range of material which may serve as the basis of a symbolic-poetic language theory. The approach therefore looks at "Die Lehrling zu Sais" with a view to identifying features of a romantic philosophy or theory of language. A seguir, procuraremos identificar na obra "Die Lehrlinge zu Saïs", de Novalis, um dos autores mais significativos do assim chamado Primeiro Romantismo Alemão, os pressupostos de uma teoria da linguagem que se sustenta no Idealismo Alemão. O problema se delineia à medida que, para Novalis, contemporâneo do estabelecimento das bases da lingüística moderna, e, ele próprio, estudioso de filologia, observar-se-ia no fenômeno da linguagem uma possível relação entre espírito e mundo, o que, por sua vez, se opõe ao conceito hoje clássico da arbitrariedade do signo. Considerada pela crítica como um fragmento de romance, a narrativa de Novalis em questão apresenta um elenco bastante rico no que se refere aos pressupostos de uma possível teoria da linguagem de caráter simbólico-poético e messiânico. Assim sendo, a abordagem a "Os Discípulos em Saïs" terá como perspectiva a possível identificação, no texto literário, de características desta filosofia ou teoria romântica da linguagem.

    "Brazil – a country of the future" ("Brasilien – ein Land der Zukunft"), written by Stefan Zweig in the 40s, is one of the few books to portray Brazil as a harmonious country. However, although the book is widely acknowledged as a fine piece of work, one cannot afford to ignore that some other German authors from the same period presented other entirely different views of Brazil. This paper focuses on the novel "Romanceiro Brasileiro" by Ulrich Becher, an author relatively neglected in the Germanic studies. The primary aim is to examine some aspects of the image of Brazil. Unlike Zweig, who shows a tendency to conceal potential conflicts which could threaten his idea of a harmonious Brazil, Becher points out the contradictions and disparities of the country, focusing on aspects which contradict the idyllic image suggested by Zweig, such as Brazil's serious social problems and injustice. By doing so, Becher may have created a more plausible image of Brazil. Poucas obras marcaram tanto o imaginário acerca do Brasil como o livro de Stefan Zweig intitulado "Brasil – um país do futuro", escrito nos anos 1940. No entanto, não obstante a fama desse livro e de sua visão de um Brasil harmonioso, não se deve esquecer que existem livros de outros autores de língua alemã, escritos nessa mesma época, com visões e interpretações acerca do Brasil divergentes daquelas reveladas por Zweig. Neste artigo, são abordados alguns aspectos da imagem do Brasil presentes no "Romanceiro Brasileiro", de Ulrich Becher – um autor relativamente negligenciado pelos estudos germânicos. Zweig, na procura por benesses do governo de Getúlio Vargas, demonstra uma tendência de ocultar possíveis conflitos que poderiam ameaçar a harmonia que ele acredita ter encontrado no Brasil. Ao contrário disso, Becher – para quem esse país foi apenas um lugar de passagem - destaca justamente as contradições e dissonâncias presentes, focalizando aspectos conflitantes com uma imagem idílica, como os grandes problemas e injustiças sociais, e chega, assim, a elaborar uma imagem talvez mais plausível do Brasil.

    The topic of this paper is to analyse the relation between dicta and translation. I will therefore discuss the origin and the main aspects of the German expression "geflügelte Worte". Afterwards I will present Portuguese translations of some quotations of Goethe's Faust in order to illustrate their structural and semantic complexity and therefore the special challenge for translation. At the end I will show that those quotations are a frequent rhetorical means of newspapers and advertising and briefly comment possibilities of translation. Neste trabalho pretendo analisar a relação entre frases célebres e a tradução. Inicialmente discutirei a origem e as particularidades do termo "Geflügelte Worte" em alemão. A seguir apresentarei traduções para o português de frases célebres muito conhecidas do Fausto de Goethe, a fim de ilustrar a complexidade estrutural e semântica das mesmas e, conseqüentemente, o especial desafio que elas representam para a tradução. Ao final, mostrarei que frases célebres alteradas são um recurso estilístico freqüente da linguagem jornalística e publicitária e tecerei alguns breves comentários sobre como lidar com este fenômeno na tradução.

    In his first autobiographical writing, the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard attempts to show his public the reason why he became the provocative writer and outsider that he was. This paper intends to analyse how this image is constructed in the book by using a specific concept of victim as well as a provocative and subjective style. On the one hand he is successful in constructing a text in which his point of view and his personality are constantly present; on the other hand it includes diverse contradictions, which will be discussed throughout this article.

    This paper investigates the role of Hunsrückisch, a dialect spoken by German descendents in South Brazil, in regard to the performance of high school students in the proficiency exam Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD-I). The article will first discuss the concept of bilinguism and then analyzes the performance of bilingual students (Portuguese/German) from the Instituo de Educação Ivoti in DSD-I exams over the last 5 years.

    Based on the bilingualism and ethnolinguistic identity research, this study aims to observe the role identity and linguistic attitudes play in a minority mother language’s maintenance or shifting process in early bilingualism cases in a societal bilingualism situation. The analyzed context comprises native speakers of essentially bilingual communities that migrate to an urban center like Porto Alegre, where the opportunities for minority mother language use are drastically restrained by the monolingual Portuguese context.     This paper discusses the role of German Jesuit priests in the conquest of the lower amazon area in the 17th century. The Luxemburg missionary John Philip Bettendorff, founder of the second largest city of Pará, Santarém, was one of the most important figures while colonizing the Estate of Maranhão e Great-Pará. His chronicle is not only an important testimony of the settlements’ history but also of the Jesuit activities as handicraft workers and artists while catechizing this region. Thus, it comprehends a part of the rich cultural memory of colonial Brazil.

    “Literatura nacional” é o resultado de uma construção variada. É claro que se poderia simplesmente enumerar todos as obras surgidas em um país e afirmar que isso é uma “literatura nacional”. Foi o que aconteceu até o século XVIII. O caráter de “literature nacional” como resultado de construção surge desde o último terço do décimo oitavo século, porque seleções conduzem o processo de definição. Tais seleções já são a delimitação de “literatura” (no sentido de toda a produção textual) à poesia ou a restrição de literatura nacional a textos em língua alemã, ou seja, a segregação de textos em outras línguas que também eram escritos ou surgiam no “próprio país”, etc. ...

    This article discusses linguistic attitudes and conceptions (beliefs and prejudices) of 20 teachers regarding the ‘German accent’ ((de)voicing of consonants and neutralization of the vibrant) and their implications in their social practices in school lessons, in three German-Portuguese bilingual communities in Rio Grande do Sul. To conclude with, a reflection about how teachers’ conceptions relate to the treatment they dispense to linguistic traces in face to face interactions.
