The book, however, is narrated by a young man tormented by the possibility of a coming catastrophe, since his best friend left town, following his mother's advice – a woman that had joined an esoteric religion. ...     This paper aims to analyze the novel "Imperium" by Christian Kracht (2012) within the long tradition of self-enactments of writers and artists in general as a constitutive element of the aesthetic field. Concerning Kracht, this is done first in the narrative text itself as a literary enactment with all its facets and second in Kracht's bewildering media appearances where his literary writings, in itself dubious, are once more rearranged, put in doubt or enriched. ... His career goes back to 1995, when his first novel "Faserland" was published ‒ an event which helped to shape the so called "Popliteratur". However, whether it is the zero hour of a work composed of other good moments or whether it is the literary mark of a generation, "Faserland" is not only an example of a pop reality. ... Christian Kracht é hoje, se não dos melhores, certamente dos mais comentados autores da ficção de língua alemã. Seu trajeto recua a 1995, ano da publicação de "Faserland", o primeiro romance, que aliás distinguiu as balizas daquela que, nessa década, se chamou "Popliteratur". It highlights some qualities of his criticism as well as his special relation to mass media and entertainment. Finally, by going into details of his biography, the text surveys the relation of the Polish-born Jewish critic with Germany and German culture. O artigo apresenta o crítico literário Marcel Reich-Ranicki e também procura explicar o fenômeno de seu sucesso na Alemanha. Aprofunda algumas particularidades de sua crítica, sua relação com a mídia de massas e o entretenimento.     In the following article, we present Sigmund Freud and Vilém Flusser not only as two intellectuals who shared some biographical similarities, but also as two important thinkers of converging propositions. Both critically analyzed the human unease towards individual and cultural differences mediated by the symbolic, and both, each one on his way, tried to propose ways of dealing with the question by emphasizing the creative powers of language and translation to overcome the boundaries of resistance, intolerance and miscommunication. ... Neste artigo pretendemos apresentar Sigmund Freud e Vilém Flusser não somente como dois intelectuais que dividem certas peculiaridades biográficas, mas como dois importantes pensadores de proposições convergentes.     In "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" (2011), Leif Randt presents a county that seems to be a perfect representation of a consumerist utopia: located on the shore, CobyCounty is characterized by abundant parties, consumerism and wellbeing. The book, however, is narrated by a young man tormented by the possibility of a coming catastrophe, since his best friend left town, following his mother's advice – a woman that had joined an esoteric religion. If the perfect functioning of this society is very similar to an utopia, the fear of an announced catastrophe brings the work closer to a dystopia. Other than both genders, the narrative does not present any centralizing kind of power – even if consumerism and advertisement are frequently mentioned. In this article, "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" will be presented in the light of utopia and dystopia studies. Its bonds to the present time will be emphasized, mostly the dichotomy between the comfort society produced by the advanced technological development and the necessity to avoid the excesses that produced by the same society in the name of a possible ecological catastrophe, that has been announced by scientists and activists, but that still does not affect people's life directly. ; Em "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" (2011), Leif Randt apresenta um condado que seria a mais perfeita representação de uma utopia consumista: localizado à beira-mar, CobyCounty é um lugar de festas abundantes, consumo e bem-estar. O livro, contudo, é narrado por um jovem atormentado pela possibilidade de uma catástrofe que se aproxima, desde que seu melhor amigo abandonou a cidade, ouvindo os conselhos da mãe que se afiliou a uma religião esotérica. Se a perfeição do funcionamento dessa sociedade se aproxima muito de uma utopia, o temor de uma catástrofe anunciada aproxima a obra de uma distopia. Deve-se notar, no entanto, que, ao contrário de utopias e distopias, a obra não apresenta uma força centralizadora de poder – mesmo que a menção ao consumismo e às propagandas seja ...

    This paper aims to analyze the novel "Imperium" by Christian Kracht (2012) within the long tradition of self-enactments of writers and artists in general as a constitutive element of the aesthetic field. Concerning Kracht, this is done first in the narrative text itself as a literary enactment with all its facets and second in Kracht's bewildering media appearances where his literary writings, in itself dubious, are once more rearranged, put in doubt or enriched. This procedure thus generates uncertainties, ambiguities and disfigurements that are the hallmark of Kracht in the contemporary literary universe. ; O artigo objetiva abordar o romance "Imperium" de Christian Kracht (2012) dentro da longa tradição estética de autoencenações de escritores e artistas em geral. No caso de Kracht, isso é feito inicialmente a partir do próprio texto narrativo como encenação literária em todas as suas facetas e, em seguida, a partir de suas desconcertantes aparições mediáticas, em que seus escritos literários, já de per si dúbios, são rearranjados, questionados ou enriquecidos. Geram-se assim incertezas, ambiguidades e desfigurações que são a marca registrada de Kracht no universo literário atual.

    If not one of the best, Christian Kracht is certainly one of the most talked about authors of fiction in the German language nowadays. His career goes back to 1995, when his first novel "Faserland" was published ‒ an event which helped to shape the so called "Popliteratur". However, whether it is the zero hour of a work composed of other good moments or whether it is the literary mark of a generation, "Faserland" is not only an example of a pop reality. It has also deserved frequent reading and interpretations, reprints and critical approaches, attracting by these means the attention of literary historiography. The novel narrates a few days' wanderings of a narcotized and affluent young man from Northern to Southern Germany reaching as far as Switzerland. There is no great adventure in the story, but the book leaves rather an impression of emptiness and fastidiousness which accompanies a senseless life. In this text, I investigate the kind of boredom produced by "Faserland". ; Christian Kracht é hoje, se não dos melhores, certamente dos mais comentados autores da ficção de língua alemã. Seu trajeto recua a 1995, ano da publicação de "Faserland", o primeiro romance, que aliás distinguiu as balizas daquela que, nessa década, se chamou "Popliteratur". Mas, seja a hora zero de uma obra composta de outros bons momentos, seja o ponteiro literário de uma geração, "Faserland" não é só exemplo pop, tem merecido constantes leituras, sempre novas tiragens, abordagens críticas e assim também a atenção da historiografia literária. No romance são narrados alguns poucos dias da vida narcotizada de um jovem endinheirado e meio sem rumo, do Norte ao Sul da Alemanha, até a Suíça. Nada extraordinário, nenhuma grande peripécia, nenhuma aventura, senão a impressão de um vazio todo presente e o fastio, força do aborrecimento. No texto, investigo que espécie de aborrecimento produz "Faserland".

    Walter Moers is one of the most important authors of contemporary Fantastic Literature in German. Since his first novel, in 1999, the author turned into a bestselling writer. His last six novels all share a common element: the fictive continent of "Zamonien", a fantastic world created by Moers. In this invented world the reader finds a lot of adventures, battles, journeys, conquests, mysteries, fights, dangers, unusual creatures and unknown places. If on one hand, the fantastic works of Moers respond to conventions of the Fantasy genre, on the other hand, they offer a new literary proposal, which breaks some conventions of this genre. This is particularly the case of the metafictional elements, which are very frequent in his novels. This paper intends to introduce a novel of Walter Moers, 'Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher' (2004), and to discuss its constitutive elements, which classify the book as a work in the Fantasy genre, emphasizing especially the metafictional aspects. ; Walter Moers é um dos grandes autores da vertente fantástica dentro da literatura alemã atual. Desde a publicação de seu primeiro romance, em 1999, o escritor consagrou-se como autor de best-sellers. Nos seis romances publicados até a presente data tem-se um elemento comum, que serve de fio condutor às obras: o continente fictício de "Zamonien", um mundo maravilhoso criado por Moers. Esse mundo inventado é palco para inúmeras aventuras, lutas, jornadas, conquistas, mistérios, disputas, perigos, criaturas inusitadas e cenários desconhecidos. Se, por um lado, as obras fantásticas de Moers estão de acordo com as convenções do gênero da Fantasy; por outro, elas trazem consigo uma proposta literária inovadora, que rompe com algumas convenções desse gênero. É o caso da metaficcionalidade, presente de forma marcante em seus romances. Pretende-se nesse trabalho apresentar brevemente um romance de Walter Moers, 'Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher' (2004), discorrer sobre os elementos constitutivos que inserem a obra no gênero da Fantasy e, por fim, ...

    The article presents the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki and tries to explain his extraordinary success in Germany. It highlights some qualities of his criticism as well as his special relation to mass media and entertainment. Finally, by going into details of his biography, the text surveys the relation of the Polish-born Jewish critic with Germany and German culture. ; O artigo apresenta o crítico literário Marcel Reich-Ranicki e também procura explicar o fenômeno de seu sucesso na Alemanha. Aprofunda algumas particularidades de sua crítica, sua relação com a mídia de massas e o entretenimento.     This article aims to analyse the diversity of hate in Christian Weise's play "Masaniello". With his project of a pedagogical theatre, the author wants to prepare his students for future political activities. This includes the development of the ability to imagine other argumentative horizons in order to anticipate possible reactions. This article concentrates on the aesthetic configuration of hate and its implications for the political discourse, taking into consideration the hate felt by members of the clergy, the nobility and the people. ; Este artigo pretende analisar a diversidade do ódio na peça "Masaniello" de Christian Weise. Com seu projeto de teatro pedagógico, o autor deseja preparar seus estudantes para as futuras atividades políticas. Isso inclui o desenvolvimento da habilidade de imaginar outros horizontes argumentativos para antecipar possíveis reações. Este artigo se concentra na configuração estética do ódio e suas implicações para o discurso político, considerando o ódio experimentado pelo clero, pela nobreza e pelo povo.

    In the following article, we present Sigmund Freud and Vilém Flusser not only as two intellectuals who shared some biographical similarities, but also as two important thinkers of converging propositions. Both critically analyzed the human unease towards individual and cultural differences mediated by the symbolic, and both, each one on his way, tried to propose ways of dealing with the question by emphasizing the creative powers of language and translation to overcome the boundaries of resistance, intolerance and miscommunication. Therefore, we intended here to discuss the contribution to the understanding of each one of these writers and their ideas by proposing a crossed reading of their works. ; Neste artigo pretendemos apresentar Sigmund Freud e Vilém Flusser não somente como dois intelectuais que dividem certas peculiaridades biográficas, mas como dois importantes pensadores de proposições convergentes. Ambos analisaram criticamente o mal-estar humano face às diferenças individuais e culturais mediadas pelo simbólico e ambos, cada qual ao seu modo, procuraram apresentar maneiras de lidar com tal questão enfatizando as capacidades criativas da linguagem e da tradução em ultrapassar os limites das diferenças, da intolerância e do mal-entendido. Pretendemos, portanto, discutir aqui as contribuições para o entendimento de cada um destes escritores a partir de uma leitura cruzada de suas obras.

Diese tieftraurig lakonische Anfangszeile aus dem Kriegslied von Matthias Claudius – auch der Titel eines Antikriegsgedichts von Kurt Tucholsky – hat auch 100 Jahre nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs nichts von ihrer fürchterlichen Aktualität verloren. Im Erinnerungsjahr der 'Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts' stehen aber nicht die aktuellen Konflikte, sondern vor allem 'Julikrise' und 'Augusterlebnis' oder der 'Geist von 1914' im Mittelpunkt zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen. Die fünfte Ausgabe der REAL ist neueren Beiträgen gewidmet, die sich aus germanistischer und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive mit Literatur und Literaten, Künstlern und Intellektuellen aus der Zeit vor und nach dem Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs beschäftigen.

    Die Zeitschrift Pandaemonium Germanicum erscheint zweimal jährlich und versteht sich als Forum für die wissenschaftliche Diskussion in den verschiedenen Bereichen der internationalen Germanistik, nämlich der Literatur- und Übersetzungswissenschaft, Linguistik, DaF und Kulturstudien. Die Zeitschrift wird von der deutschen Abteilung der FFLCH-USP (Universität São Paulo) seit 1997 herausgegeben und will zur Verbreitung unveröffentlichter Forschungen von GermanistInnen aus Brasilien und anderen Ländern, sowie zur Förderung des Dialogs zwischen der Germanistik und anderen Wissensbereichen beitragen.
