    In this Paper, the idea of "ethnopoetics" is seen not exclusively as the characteristic trait of Hubert Fichte's (1935-1986) work, but as one among several forms of New Ethnology, which appeared in the context of the crisis of traditional ethnology in the 20th century. The first part intends to conceptually clarify several issues introduced by Fichte, such as the transformation of the world into words, the connection between fieldwork and interpretation, the "participant observation", and the encounter between hegemonic and peripheral cultures, comparing them with the ethnographical essays of Lévi-Strauss, Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard and Ruth Benedict. The second part is devoted to Fichte's posthumous book "Explosion", published in 1993 – where he relates his experience of three journeys in Brazil, between 1969 and 1982, a text which may be considered as his working journal and guide to all his publications on Brazil. I discuss how far the author realized his proposals to write a "novel of ethnology" and to create a "new ethnology". Der Begriff der "Ethnopoesie" wird hier nicht ausschließlich als Merkmal des Werkes von Hubert Fichte (1935-1986) verstanden, sondern als eine unter verschiedenen Ausdrucksformen der "neuen Ethnologie", die im Zusammenhang mit der Krise der Ethnologie im 20. Jahrhundert entstand. Im ersten Teil dieses Beitrags geht es darum, von Fichte aufgeworfene Fragen wie die "Verwörterung der Welt", das Verhältnis von Feldforschung und Interpretation, die "teilnehmende Beobachtung" und die Begegnung von hegemonialen und peripheren Kulturen im Vergleich mit den ethnographischen Arbeiten von Lévi-Strauss, Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard und Ruth Benedict begrifflich zu erhellen. Im zweiten Teil wird die Frage erörtert, inwieweit Fichte in seinem posthum veröffentlichten Buch "Explosion" (1993), in dem die Erfahrungen seiner zwischen 1969 und 1982 unternommenen Brasilienreisen ihren Niederschlag fanden und das als Arbeitsjournal und Leitfaden für seine Publikationen über Brasilien gelten kann, seinen Anspruch eines "Romans der Ethnologie" bzw. einer "neuen Ethnologie" verwirklicht hat.

    This article shows how the genre Bildungsroman (self-development novel) has been assimilated to the Brazilian literary tradition. Through the examples of Cristina Ferreira Pinto's "O 'Bildungsroman' feminino" ("The female novel of development") and Eduardo de Assis Duarte's "Jorge Amado e o 'Bildungsroman' proletário" ("Jorge Amado and the proletarian novel of development"), this article focuses the dynamic process by means of which a typical European genre has been assimilated by a young South-American literary tradition. Der vorliegende Artikel zeigt, wie die Gattung Bildungsroman von der literarischen Tradition Brasiliens assimiliert wird. Anhand des Buches "O 'Bildungsroman' feminino" von Cristina Ferreira Pinto und des Aufsatzes "Jorge Amado e o 'Bildungsroman' proletário" von Eduardo de Assis Duarte wird der Prozeß nachvollzogen, durch den ein typisch europäisches Textgenre durch eine junge südamerikanische Literaturtradition aufgenommen wird.

Der vorliegende Aufsatz stellt einige der wichtigsten Aspekte der Geschichte des deutschen Exils nach 1933 und der Geschichte des Exils der deutschsprachigen Schriftsteller und Intellektuellen in Brasilien dar.     This paper aims to analyze the novel "Imperium" by Christian Kracht (2012) within the long tradition of self-enactments of writers and artists in general as a constitutive element of the aesthetic field. Concerning Kracht, this is done first in the narrative text itself as a literary enactment with all its facets and second in Kracht's bewildering media appearances where his literary writings, in itself dubious, are once more rearranged, put in doubt or enriched. ... O artigo objetiva abordar o romance "Imperium" de Christian Kracht (2012) dentro da longa tradição estética de autoencenações de escritores e artistas em geral. His career goes back to 1995, when his first novel "Faserland" was published ‒ an event which helped to shape the so called "Popliteratur". However, whether it is the zero hour of a work composed of other good moments or whether it is the literary mark of a generation, "Faserland" is not only an example of a pop reality. ... Christian Kracht é hoje, se não dos melhores, certamente dos mais comentados autores da ficção de língua alemã. Seu trajeto recua a 1995, ano da publicação de "Faserland", o primeiro romance, que aliás distinguiu as balizas daquela que, nessa década, se chamou "Popliteratur".     The article presents the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki and tries to explain his extraordinary success in Germany. It highlights some qualities of his criticism as well as his special relation to mass media and entertainment. Finally, by going into details of his biography, the text surveys the relation of the Polish-born Jewish critic with Germany and German culture. O artigo apresenta o crítico literário Marcel Reich-Ranicki e também procura explicar o fenômeno de seu sucesso na Alemanha. Aprofunda algumas particularidades de sua crítica, sua relação com a mídia de massas e o entretenimento. Finalmente investiga o percurso incomum de sua vida como crítico judeu das literaturas de língua alemã nascido na Polônia e sua relação com a cultura alemã.

Fakten, Daten, Erinnerungen 1945-1954" (1998) by politician Ewald Ernst, "Die Stasi war mein Eckermann: oder mein Leben mit der Wanze" (1991) by writer Erich Loest, and "Geboren am 13. August. Der Sozialismus und ich" (2004) by journalist Jens Bisky, the aim of this article is to sketch a brief study on the diverse forms and phases of the violence as an instrument of power, practiced by the State of the SED in the German Democratic Republic in the 40 years of its existence, as well as discuss some theoretical aspects, focusing especially on the concept of "literature as testimony". The five analyzed reports of auto-biographical nature adopt a crucially critical tone concerning the encroachments in a totalitarian State. "Overcoming Walls" in the 20 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, from this point of view, implies a denouncement attitude against forgetfulness concerning a traumatic past. O objetivo do presente artigo é esboçar, a partir da interpretação das obras "Zeit-Zeugen. Inhaftiert in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen" (1996), organizada por Gabriele Camphausen, "Folterzelle 36 Berlin-Pankow. Erlebnisbericht einer Stasihaft" (1993), de Timo Zilli, "Ein guter Kampf. Fakten, Daten, Erinnerungen 1945-1954" (1998) do político Ewald Ernst, "Die Stasi war mein Eckermann: oder mein Leben mit der Wanze" (1991), do escritor Erich Loest, e "Geboren am 13. August. Der Sozialismus und ich" (2004), do jornalista Jens Bisky, um breve estudo sobre as diversas formas e fases da violência enquanto instrumento de poder, praticada pelo Estado do SED na República Democrática Alemã nos 40 anos de sua existência, e discutir especialmente alguns aspectos teóricos sobre o conceito de "literatura de testemunho". Os cinco relatos analisados, de caráter memorialista e autobiográfico, se pautam por um tom decididamente crítico frente aos desmandos num Estado totalitário. "Transpor muros" nos 20 anos após a Queda do Muro de Berlim, desse ponto de vista, implica um olhar memorialista de denúncia contra o esquecimento frente a um passado traumático. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist, anhand der Interpretation der Werke "Zeit-Zeugen. Inhaftiert in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen" (1996), herausgegeben von Gabriele Camphausen, "Folterzelle 36 Berlin-Pankow. Erlebnisbericht einer Stasihaft" (1993) von Timo Zilli, "Ein guter Kampf. Fakten, Daten, Erinnerungen 1945-1954" (1998) des Politikers Ewald Ernst, "Die Stasi war mein Eckermann: oder mein Leben mit der Wanze" (1991) des Schriftstellers Erich Loest, und "Geboren am 13. August. Der Sozialismus und ich" (2004) des Journalisten Jens Bisky, eine kleine Studie über die verschiedenen Formen und Phasen der Gewalt zu präsentieren, die vom SED-Staat in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik in den 40 Jahren ihrer Existenz als Instrument der Macht angewandt wurde, und besonders einige theoretische Aspekte über den Begriff von "Zeugnisliteratur" zu erörtern. Die fünf analysierten Berichte memorialistischer und autobiographischer Art beruhen auf einem entscheidend kritischen Ton bezüglich der Übergriffe in einem totalitären Staat. "Mauern überwinden" in den 20 Jahren nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer, aus diesem Blickwinkel betrachtet, impliziert eine memorialistische Sicht von Denunzierung gegen das Vergessen gegenüber einer traumatischen Vergangenheit.

    This article discusses the change of paradigms perceived in Germany's Jewish community in the first decades of the 19th. Century, as a result of the fall of the walls which until that time separated Jews from their Christian German neighbours. The triumph of the ideas of Illuminism and the rapid penetration of these ideas in a community which longed for social integration, and which had hitherto been discriminated because of its ethnic and religious background, stimulated the adoption of new world views and new concepts of nationality and spirituality among Jews who had recently left the walls of the Ghettoes behind. One of the central passages in this change process is described by Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) as the transformation of the idea of 'Revelation' into 'Bildung' – a cardinal concept in the 19th Century German culture. This seems to explain German Jews' affinity with the humanistic culture of their time: it now appears to occupy the central role which had hitherto been reserved to religious studies. Este artigo trata da rápida substituição de paradigmas que se processa no seio da comunidade judaica alemã nas primeiras décadas do século 19, como resultado da derrubada dos muros que, até então, separavam os judeus dos alemães cristãos. O triunfo das idéias do Iluminismo bem como sua rápida penetração no âmbito de uma comunidade ansiosa por integração numa sociedade que prometia a igualdade entre todos os seus membros, independentemente de sua origem étnica ou religiosa, estimulou, entre os judeus egressos dos guetos, a adoção de novas visões de mundo e de novos conceitos de nacionalidade e espiritualidade. Uma das passagens centrais nesse processo de mudança é descrita pelo escritor Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) como a transformação da idéia de 'Revelação', central à tradição judaica, em 'Bildung', fundamental na cultura alemã do século 19. Trata-se de uma mudança de paradigmas que explica, de certa forma, a grande afinidade dos judeus do mundo de língua alemã com a reflexão humanística de seu tempo, que parece ocupar o lugar privilegiado antes reservado aos estudos de caráter religioso.

    This lecture deals with the development of the post-war radio drama in Germany. After a short introduction to the genre, we discuss three exemplary radio dramas: Günter Eich’s "Träume", NWDR 1951, typical for the literary radio drama, and "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" by Hans Schüttler, NDR 2007, a small play which could be considered as representative of contemporary German audio art. The last example comes from a radio drama following the current pop culture trends. "Eisstadt" (WDR 2005, by Schorsch Kamerun), mixes high and low culture, different speeches and music styles and shows the same political ambitions present in the play "Träume". Recently, the German radio play has been going through a period of revitalization, even though under quite different conditions from those observed in the fifties. O artigo aborda a trajetória da peça radiofônica alemã do pós-guerra. Depois de uma introdução ao gênero da radiopeça, são comentados três peças exemplares: "Träume" de Günter Eich, NWDR 1951, como exemplo típico de uma radiopeça literária, e "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" de Hans Schüttler, NDR, do ano 2007, uma obra representativa da Audio-Art contemporânea. O último exemplo é de uma radiopeça pop, "Eisstadt", WDR 2005, de Schorsch Kamerun. Eisstadt, uma bricolagem com a mesma pretensão política de "Träume", mistura a cultura erudita com a cultura de massa e combina os mais diversos estilos de língua e de música. Ultimamente, com a valorização do audio na Alemanha, a peça radiofônica está passando por uma fase de revitalização, porém sob condições diversas daquelas dos anos cinquenta.

    Thomas Mann's Brazilian origin, from his mother Julia da Silva Bruhns, made it possible for the adult writer to make contact with Brazilian or foreign intellectuals, connected to the cultural scene in Brazil. In the first group we find Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and Erico Verissimo. Living in Brazil, Karl Lustig-Prean (whom later returns to Europe), and the translator Herbert Caro, settled in Brazil. Also, the direct or indirect contact with thinkers and writers, such as Karl Loewenstein, Heinrich Eduard Jacob, Marte Brill and Stefan Zweig has played a part in bringing Thomas Mann closer to the Brazilian universe. This and other points of contact are described in the present article, which intends to diffuse documents and data long unpublished or unavailable, offering up-to-date approaches to Thomas Mann works, as well as indicating biographical and documental information related to the writer, regarding his relationship to Brazil. A origem brasileira de Thomas Mann, por parte de sua mãe, Julia da Silva Bruhns, deu ocasião, na maturidade do escritor, a seu contato com intelectuais brasileiros ou estrangeiros ligados à cena cultural do Brasil. No primeiro grupo, tem-se Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda e Erico Verissimo. Residentes no Brasil, Karl Lustig-Prean, que posteriormente retornará à Europa, e o tradutor Herbert Caro, que se radica em definitivo no Brasil. Também o contato direto ou indireto com pensadores e escritores como Karl Loewenstein, Heinrich Eduard Jacob, Marte Brill e Stefan Zweig colaboraram para a aproximação de Thomas Mann ao universo brasileiro. Estes e outros pontos de contato são descritos no presente artigo, que pretende difundir dados e documentos há muito inacessíveis ou inéditos, no sentido de contribuir com abordagens atualizadas da obra de Thomas Mann e oferecer à pesquisa especializada a indicação de dados biográficos e documentais relacionados ao escritor, no que concerne à sua relação com o Brasil.

    The object of this paper is to attempt a comparison between the perception of the big city by an author of German expressionism, Georg Heym, and the Brazilian modernist Mario de Andrade. The aim is to compare the poetic visions of two cities, Berlin and Sao Paulo, at the beginning of the twentieth century and highlight both, the coincidences and differences in the perception of urban life, based on the ideas of the German sociologist Georg Simmel on the life of man in modernity and the stimulations of nerve impulses.

    Based on a supposedly new discovery of pornographic magazines, James Hawes aimed, in Excavating Kafka (2008), to reset the almost saintlike image of Kafka. This article will argue that these publications are fare from being hard-core pornography and their existence has been a long known fact. It will then discuss relations between literary texts and biography with reference to Kafka’s novel Der Process, written in 1914 and published only posthumous.

    Novalis is perhaps the most expressive poet of German Early Romanticism. His ideas, mainly in form of fragments, were strongly based upon Fichte’s theory of magic idealism and are substantial part of his literary work, which presents a mixture of genres such as poetry, rhetoric, philosophical and religious themes and even social aspects. This article will introduce some of Novalis’ personal aspects with the intent of briefly introducing two of his main issues: the concept of Fragment, as exploited in ‘Die Lehrlinge zu Saï’s, and his ideal of a poetic, self referent language.

    This article deals with two short stories by Leopold Kompert (1822-1886), a Jewish author from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and one of the major names in a genre which became known as Ghettoliteratur. As all other authors in his genre, Kompert dealt mainly with the conflicts involved in the passage from the world of traditional Jewry towards 19th into modernity. But he did this in a typical Habsburg way. Rather then emphasizing the incompatibility between these two worlds, Kompert tries, on the one hand, to preserve the memory of the vanishing world of the Jewish Shtetl, and on the other hand to create a synthesis between this world and the multi-lingual and multi-cultural Austro-Hungarian Empire.

    The lifelong friendship between Anna Seghers and Jorge Amado began in the late 1940s, when both were engaged in the international communist struggle for world peace. After becoming disillusioned with the Stalinist tyranny, Amado left the PC, whereas Seghers officially continued to follow the party line. She concealed her critique of (post-) stalinist theory and practice in some essays on literature history, especially on Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Schiller – essays which she dedicated to Amado, who would understand the problems and contradictions within her political involvement.

    The paper aims to discuss the relations between culture, power and language in Bachmann’s story "Undine geht". Undine is a water creature that lives among humans for a period of time and this fact allows her to criticize them, their way of life, of love and of relate to others. Undine’s critique is that the discourse or language shows the domination that is present in the human relations, for example, in the submission of the individual to a collectivity, as well as in the relations between men and women.     The objective of this article is to present a brief study on the wrong path of the poetry in the service of the Third Reich, whose roots raise to the tradition of the proto-nationalist and romantic nationalist poetry of the 19th Century. By interpreting the poems “Die Mutter” (“The Mother”) by Josepha Berens-Totenohl, “Deutsche Ostern 1933” (“German Easter of 1933”) by Heinrich Anacker, “Dem Führer” (“To the Führer”) by Will Vesper, and “Wir” (“We”) by Anne Marie Koeppen, we can observe the presence of discursive marks that remit to the Nazi jargon, what make them mere instruments of the totalitarian propaganda.
