    Other ; Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Garbage, The City, and Death. A Four Act Scandal in Post-war Germany The paper explores the dramaturgy of the scandals around the play Garbage, The City and Death (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod) by German playwright, theatre and film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Published in 1976, the play immediately caused a scandal in West Germany, because it was accused of reproducing anti-Semitic stereotypes. The presentation sheds light on the different phases of the scandal and their historical and cultural contexts in post-war Germany – starting as a literary scandal in 1976, being transformed into a theatre scandal in the 1980ies and finally being dissolved by the German premiere in 2009. The paper is structured as follows: Act One: The Literary Scandal. Destroying Fassbinder’s Garbage, Act Two: Preventing the Staging of the Play, Act Three: Blocking the Opening Night, Act Four: Performing the Play in Germany. By analysing the dramaturgical structure of this specific scandal, the paper discusses the following hypotheses: 1. Scandals arise through the circulation of decontextualised information in public. This is due to either a lack of information about the actual object or incident being scandalised or a lack of information about the context of the object or incident. This lack is caused by the logic of the scandal itself: Because the play or the performance is prohibited, it has been withdrawn from the public, making it impossible to form a well-founded opinion on the controversy. 2. The scandal is driven forward by an emotionalising rhetoric built around the decontextualised information. 3. Once the gap of information is filled, the scandalising rhetoric turns into a rhetoric of irrelevance: Reviews of the first performance of Garbage, The City and Death in Germany considered the play hardly a matter of public concern.

    Abstract ; Spuren der Teilung Berlins sind trotz angleichender Tendenz auch noch 25 Jahre nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer in Form alltäglicher Unterschiede erlebbar. Diese empirische Arbeit widmet sich der Frage, inwiefern dies ebenso auf Spracheinstellung und Verwendung des Berlinischen in Ost und West zutrifft. Auf der Suche nach indexikalischen Merkmalen der Stadtsprache wird Berlinisch zunächst aus historischer Perspektive und schließlich anhand seiner sprachlichen Merkmale beschrieben. Um den Gebrauch des Berlinischen in gesprochener Sprache quantifizieren zu können, wird eine Skala anhand sechs markanter, phonetischen Abweichungen des Berlinischen zum Hochdeutschen entwickelt. Auf Basis dieser Zielvariablen werden fünf Zeichnungen angefertigt, mit deren Hilfe Berlinische Äußerungen männlicher Taxifahrer aus Ost- und Westberlin elizitiert werden. Nach Durchführung des Quasi-Experiments, Transkription und Auszählung lässt sich zeigen, dass zwischen den beiden Teilnehmergruppen zwar keine klar abgrenzbaren Unterschiede in Spracheinstellung und Verwendung bestehen, sehr wohl aber zwischen den 19 Teilnehmern. Dieses Ergebnis wird schließlich anhand der ehemaligen Westberliner Insellage sowie der Ostberliner postsozialistischen Transformation nachvollzogen. Als theoretisches Framework dienen überdies das Labovsche Paradigma, Bourdieus Kapitalbegriff mit seinen Schnittstellen zur Linguistik sowie ein neuerer Ansatz zu Sprache als identitätsbildendes Instrument. ; Abstract ; 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, everyday life in East and West is harmonizing again. However, one can still see differences caused by the former division of Berlin. This thesis is devoted to the question, in what way this also applies to the attitude towards and usage of Berlin dialect. Firstly, the urban vernacular is pictured by its historical situatedness and linguistic characteristics, so that indexical features can be determined. Subsequently, six typical phonetic deviations of Berlin dialect are used in order to create a scale, allowing to quantify the oral use of that dialect. On the basis of these target variables, five drawings are created in such a way that, after being shown to male taxi drivers from East and West Berlin, they elicit Berlinese utterances. After conducting the quasi-experiment and transcribing and counting its outcome, there are admittedly no definable differences in attitude towards and usage of Berlin dialect between the participant groups. Even so, results considerably differentiate amid the 19 taxi drivers. The results finally are evaluated by reference to the former West Berlin remoteness and the post-socialist transformation in East Berlin. Furthermore, the conceptual framework includes the Labovian paradigm, Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital, and also a newer approach considering language as an identity-establishing property.
