Now living in Paris, Malte begins to record his life in a series of loosely connected notes, diary entries, prose poems, parables and stories, ostensibly collected by a fictional editor to form the Notebooks. Focusing on Malte's observations and experiences in the present, recollections of his childhood and family, and his reflections on historical events, these notes in highly crafted poetic prose explore the themes of life in the metropolis, poverty, sickness and death, love, memory and time, and perception and language. The only extended prose work by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge is a landmark in the development of the twentieth-century novel. It marks a radical departure from nineteenth-century realism, transcending conventions of linear narrative to reflect a consciousness in crisis, and an archetypal confrontation with the modern. -- Publisher (back cover).

    The Poet as Phenomenologist: Rilke and the New Poems opens up new perspectives on the relation between Rilke's poetry and phenomenological philosophy, illustrating the ways in which poetry can offer an exceptional response to the philosophical problem of dualism. Drawing on the work of Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, Luke Fischer makes a new contribution to the tradition of phenomenological poetics and expands the debate among Germanists concerning the phenomenological status of Rilke's poetry, which has been severely limited to comparisons of Rilke and Husserl. Fischer explicates an implicit phenomenology of perception in Rilke's writings from his middle period (1902-1910). He argues that Rilke cultivated an artistic perception that, in a philosophically significant manner, overcomes the opposition between the sensuous and the intelligible while simultaneously transcending the boundaries of philosophy. Fischer offers novel interpretations of central poems from Rilke's Neue Gedichte (1907) and Der neuen Gedichte anderer Teil (1908) and frames them as the ultimate articulation of Rilke's non-dualistic vision. He thus demonstrates the continuity between Rilke and phenomenology while arguing that poetry, in this case, provides the most adequate response to a philosophical problem.

    "Ur-Geräusch" heißt ein Aufsatz von Rainer Maria Rilke, den er 1919 veröffentlichte und nach dem Carsten Nicolai seine Ausstellung im Kunstverein Braunschweig im letzten Jahr benannte. In dem Text schrieb Rilke über den Phonographen,der vor fast 140 Jahren als Vorgänger des Plattenspielers erfunden wurde und erstmalig Klang reproduzieren konnte. Ähnlich dieser technischen Neuerung findet Carsten Nicolai visuelle Formen für die Aufzeichnung und Wiedergabe von Schallwellen. Für seine Installation im Kunstverein Braunschweig ließ er Rilkes "Ur-Geräusch" von Jule Böwe einsprechen. In dem Künstlerbuch stellt er die Hüllkurve - das visualisierte Bild ihrer Stimme - dem gedruckten Text gegenüber. In den Innenseiten der japanischen Bindung sind Abbildungen seiner Installationen als "hidden track" versteckt.
