    Using elicited experimental data from 35 kindergartners, this article investigates the ability of children aged 3–6 to deal with German ambisyllabic consonants. In this age group – yet without structured tuition in reading and writing, the development of the phonologic system still in progress – both intra- and inter-subject variation appears to be greater than previous studies conducted on school children revealed. It is argued that this variability supports the view of an exemplar-based theory on language acquisition; stable analytic knowledge on this specific syllable structure emerges as a function of age and frequency. Simultaneously, the data suggest a second kind of underlying variation, stemming from the contact of two conflicting typological syllable systems.

    By evaluating two corpora containing linguistic data on spoken standard language usage (with a total of 770 speakers), the current range of variation of lexical stress in loanwords will be analyzed. In doing so, the focus will be on the age and background of the speakers to be able to document processes of linguistic change and regionalisms. Regarding the phenomenon studied here, it becomes apparent that more detailed and multicausal separate analyses are required to interpret the results conclusively in spite of an overall trend that was at irst convincing (and that would support the theoretical assumptions concerning the loanwordʼs age and the source language inluencing the rate of assimilation). The results of the individual analyses contradict the assumed “overall trend”. One of the corpora was collected by experienced ield workers, while the other was collected by students. By comparing both corpora, some light can be shed onto the question as to what extent “undirected” and less rigidly collected data can support or complement more extensive and costly research projects.

    Im Folgenden werten wir Daten zu jeweils zehn Lexemen von mehreren hundert Sprechern aus, um die Realisierungspraxis von hiatfähigen Silbengrenzen im Gebrauchsstandard empirisch aus regionaler und sozialer Perspektive darzustellen. Wir stellen die Ergebnisse in Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung des Neuhochdeutschen unter Substratwirkung des Niederdeutschen und zeigen, was dies für die Hypothese eines typologischen Wandels des Deutschen von einer Silben- zu einer Wortsprache nach sich zieht. ; The following article uses data from ten lexemes, each read by several hundred speakers, to assess the way in which syllable boundaries featuring a possible hiatus are realized in spoken Standard German. Both a regional and a sociolinguistic viewpoint are taken. We argue for a connection between our findings and the genesis of New High German with the interference of a Low German substratum. In addition, we outline the consequences for the hypothesis that German underwent a typological change from a syllable to a word language.
