The diachronic change of word-formation patterns is currently gaining increasing interest in cognitive-linguistic and constructionist approaches. This paper contributes to this line of research with a corpus-based investigation of nominalization with the suffix -ung in German. In doing so, it puts forward both theoretical and methodological considerations on morphology and morphological change from a usage-based perspective. Regarding methodology, the long-standing topic of how to measure (changes in) the productivity of a morphological pattern is discussed, and it is shown how statistical association measures can be applied to quantify the relationship between word-formation patterns and their bases. These findings are linked up with theoretical considerations on the interplay between constructional schemas and their respective instances.

Following Traugott’s (2007, 2008a,b) research on the grammaticalization of English degree modifiers, this paper explores the history of a family of very similar quantifier/degree-modifier constructions in German. In particular, we present a detailed diachronic analysis of ein bisschen (‘a bitDIM’) and ein wenig (‘a little’). On the basis of data from the German Text Archive (Deutsches Textarchiv) and the historical archive of the German Reference Corpus (Deutsches Referenzkorpus), we examine to what extent these constructions followed a grammaticalization path comparable to the one Traugott observed for their English counterparts. Quantitative analyses on the gradual context expansion of ein wenig and ein bisschen are combined with qualitative analyses on potential bridging contexts allowing for reanalysis to occur. Diachronically, there is a reduction in individual formal variation as the constructions converge in their behaviour. Their combined histories suggest that the older German modifiers may have served as attractor sets for an increasingly strengthened mid-level quantifier/degree-modifier schema, promoting the emergence of younger modifiers such as ein Quäntchen (‘a quantumDIM’) and ein Tick (‘a tick’) via analogy. These observations stress the crucial role that network links between constructions can play in grammaticalization.

Microarray technology allows for the monitoring of thousands of gene expressions in various biological conditions, but most of these genes are irrelevant for classifying these conditions. Feature selection is consequently needed to help reduce the dimension of the variable space. Starting from the application of the stochastic meta algorithm ``Optimal Feature Weighting" (OFW) for selecting features in various classification problems, focus is made on the multiclass problem that wrapper methods rarely handle. From a computational point of view, one of the main difficulties comes from the commonly unbalanced classes situation when dealing with microarray data. From a theoretical point of view, very few methods have been developed to minimize any classification criterion, compared to the 2-class situation (e.g. SVM, lo SVM, RFE.). The OFW approach is developed to handle multiclass problems using CART and \textit{one-vs-one} SVM as classifiers. The results are then compared with those obtained with other multiclass selection algorithm (Random Forests and the filter method F-test), on five public microarray data sets with various complexities. Statistical relevancy of the results is assessed by measuring and comparing the performances of these different approaches. The aim of this study is to heuristically evaluate which method would be the best to select genes classifying the minority classes. Application and biological interpretation are then given in the case of a pig folliculogenesis study.

LPSC-si ; There is currently in the nuclear physics community a strong interest in the use of beams of accelerated radioactive ions. Although a fast glance at the nuclide chart immediately shows the vast unknown territories on the neutron-rich side of the valley of beta stability, only few projects are concerned with the neutron-rich nuclides. The SPIRAL-II program aims at studying the techniques for delivering beams of neutron-rich radioactive nuclidesat energies of a few MeV per nucleon. For that purpose, some study groups have been formed to evaluate the possibility ofsuch a project inthe different components: physics case, target-ion sources, drivers, postacceleration and general infrastructure. The organization of the project study is given at the end of this report. You will find also the name of all the people involved in the study. The following report presents an overview of the study.

This report looks at the status quo of policies, legislation and discourse relating to urban road transport and environmental justice in the US. It presents the findings from literature study and a series of interviews conducted during a trip to the US in the summer of 2011. Interview partners came from research, regional and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and from various levels of administration. Interviews were conducted in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Sacramento and Davis (all California) as well as Washington, D.C. and Boston, MA. The report gives an overview over the current research activities in the US relating to urban transport and environmental justice (EJ), it presents the legal framework for EJ related campaigning and decision making and relates some examples of current issues and campaigns in this area in the regions visited. The text also conveys the evaluations and opinions of those who were interviewed (in anonymous form). The trip was funded by the American Council on Germany through the 2011 McCloy Fellowship in Environmental Policy.

Bonn, Germany; 2001: 329-338.

Kügler F, Smolibocki B, Arnold D, et al. DIMA - Annotation Guidelines for German Intonation. In: Proceedings of the 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences . Glasgow, Scotland; 2015: 317. ; This paper presents newly developed guidelines for prosodic annotation of German as a consensus system agreed upon by German intonologists. The DIMA system is rooted in the framework of autosegmental-metrical phonology. One important goal of the consensus is to make exchanging data between groups easier since German intonation is currently annotated according to different models. To this end, we aim to provide guidelines that are easy to learn. The guidelines were evaluated running an inter-annotator reliability study on three different speech styles (read speech, monologue and dialogue). The overall high κ between 0.76 and 0.89 (depending on the speech style) shows that the DIMA conventions can be applied successfully.

Herrmann JB, Byszuk J, Grisot G. Using Word Embeddings for Validation and Enhancement of Spatial Entity Lists. In: International Conference Digital Humanities 2022. Tokyo, Japan . 2022. ; Spatial distant reading uses computational means to investigate fictional representations of space as a central category of sense-making (Lefebre, 1974), both in fictional world building (e.g., Bologna, 2020) and in societal contexts (e.g., Wilkens, 2021). Our spatial distant reading project investigates the affective topologies of German-Swiss literature to examine different types of spatial representation in fictional Swiss-German prose between 1854 and 1930, assessing iconic differences such as culture/nature, urban/rural (Rehm, 2014), as well as the (alpine) mountains’ role in Swiss literary national framing (Zimmer, 1998). A key resource is a list of spatial terms (N=187,421 entities), including spatial named entities, other urban and rural toponyms, as well as natural terms (Grisot & Herrmann, in prep.). In the current paper, we take a methodological focus on this resource, exploring word embeddings for validation (Task A) and extension (Task B) of our spatial entity lists.

I know the children’s university is the best university in the world,” says Elisabeth, who is 9 years old and an attendee at the children’s university in Vienna. This charming compliment paid to the children’s university organizers raises an opportunity for further critical inquiries. The statement puts “real” universities on a par with children’s universities and therefore contains the implicit question of the status of children’s universities in the educational landscape: as a hybrid of formal and non-formal education. The specialist conference “On the way to the ‘best Children’s University’: The Supply and Demand Relationship under the Principle of Participation. Opportunities and Challenges”, took place from 8 to 10 May at the University of Cologne, addressed this intermediate position in all its facets. Further topics were possibilities for getting children involved as equal partners, and an international comparison of children’s university models. The conference was funded by the Ford Foundation and supported by KölnAlumni – Freunde und Förderer der Universität e.V. It was organized in partnership with the international children’s university network EUCUNET along with the multinational EU project “SiSCatalyst. Children as change agents for science and society”.

This paper is concerned with the distinction between pre- and postpositioned (initial and final) wenn-clauses in German, and with the distinction between written and spoken language. A simple cross-tabulation of the two features [spoken/written] and [pre-/ postpositioned] (section 3) shows that initial wenn-clauses are preferred in spoken German, but final wenn-clauses are preferred in written German. These findings are in need of an explanation, which will be given in sections 4 and 5. Section 2 sketches the main characteristics of German wenn-clauses as compared to English conditional (if-) clauses. The findings and discussions in this paper are corpus-based. They are partly quantitative, partly qualitative. With respect to both dimensions, the claim is that a full understanding of the syntax of (particularly) spoken language eludes the possibilities of a purely introspective methodology. Of course, no (quantitative or qualitative) corpus-based investigation can do without a strong reliance on the analyst's knowledge ( intuition') about the language being researched; in fact, finding valid generalizations always involves Gedankenexperimente playing with structural changes in and recontextualizations of the examples' ; published

Literacy acquisition is one of the primary goals of school education, and usually it takes place in the national language of the respective country. At the same time, schools accommodate pupils with different home languages who might or might not be fluent in the national language and who start from other linguistic backgrounds in their acquisition of literacy. While it is safe to say that schools with a monolingual policy are not prepared to deal with the factual multilingualism in their classrooms in a systematic way, bilingual pupils have to deal with it nonetheless. The interdisciplinary and comparative research project “Literacy Acquisition in Schools in the Context of Migration and Multilingualism” (LAS) investigated the practical processes of literacy acquisition in two countries, Germany and Turkey, where the monolingual orientation of schools is as much a reality as are the multilingual backgrounds of many of their pupils. The basic assumption was that pupils cope with the ways they are engaged by the school – both socially and academically – based on their cultural and linguistic repertoires acquired biographically, providing them with more or less productive options regarding the acquisition of literary skills. By comparing the literary development of bilingual children with that of their monolingual classmates throughout one school year in the first and the seventh grade in Germany and Turkey, respectively, we found out that the restricting potential of multilingualism is located rather on the part of the schools than on the part of the pupils. While the individual bilingual pupil almost naturally uses his/her home language as a resource for literacy acquisition in the school language, schools still tend to regard the multilingual backgrounds of their pupils as irrelevant or even as an impediment to adequate schooling. We argue that by ignoring or even suppressing the specific linguistic potentials of bilingualism, bilingual pupils are put at a structural disadvantage. This research report is the ...

Psych-verbs, exhibiting a wide range of construction types, challenge the assumption that verbs sharing the same theta-grid and event structure select the same case patterns. Consequently, previous research has tried to trace back the constructional variants of these verbs to differences in deep syntactic or semantic (event- or causal) structure. However, in German a construction type may exhibit semantically distinct subclasses, and a semantic subclass may have different syntactic realizations. Thus, it is difficult to find general linking patterns of psych-verbs. On the other hand, it is characteristic of psych-verbs to have non-psych-readings as well. We argue that these readings determine case selection. In the centre of our argumentation is the principle of Lexical Economy according to which entries in the mental lexicon are as simple as possible. The case frame must be compatible with all readings of the verb. Thus, the reading with the strongest thematic distinctiveness of each argument is crucial for case selection, typically a reading with a volitional agent and a strongly affected patient. Such readings impose stronger restrictions on case selection than psych-readings. The linking theory of our approach is based on Dowty’s theory of proto-roles (1991) and its modification and implementation in Optimality Theory in Primus (2002).

Psych-verbs have been a touch-stone to linking-theories, which assume that case selection is determined by thematic roles. Though psych-verbs share the same thematic grid (experiencer and stimulus), they show different case frames. Different syntactic (structural) and semantic (event- or causal structure) approaches exist, but at least in German we will show that none of the several approaches to psych-verbs cover all differences and similarities of the several formal classes of psych-verbs in that language. In this paper we argue that the case selection of psych-verbs does not depend on their psychical reading at all. While Functional Expressivity requires that different thematic roles are expressed by different forms, Lexical Economy states that lexical entries should be minimally, i.e. verbs should only provide one case frame. Thus, the case frame of a verb must be compatible to the thematic requirements of all readings of this verb. Researchers paid little attention to the fact that polysemy is characteristic for psych-verbs. Psychverbs have (or have had) other, more specific readings, as well, and occasional psychical readings are possible for most verbs. According to the proto-role approach of Dowty (1991) and its modifications by Primus (1999b, 2002a, 2002b, 2002c), case selection is determined by the grade of agentivity or patientivity of arguments. Concrete readings have stronger agents and patients and make therefore stronger restrictions to case selection, and the psychical reading of a verb is always compatible with this reading. Thus, the case selection of psych-verbs is not affected by its psychical reading.

This means that when the GDPR becomes applicable, all the EU countries will have the same rules regarding the protection of personal data — at least in principle, since some details (including in the area of research — see below) are expressly left to the discretion of the Member States. The GDPR is a particularly ambitious piece of legislation (consisting of 99 articles and 173 recitals) whose intended territorial scope extends beyond the borders of the European Union. Its main concepts and principles are essentially similar to those of the Personal Data Directive, but enriched with interpretation developed through the case law of the CJEU and the opinions of the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party (hereinafter: WP29). This White Paper will discuss the main principles of data protection and their impact on language resources, as well as special rules regarding research under the GDPR and the standardisation mechanisms recognized by the Regulation.

Frimer et al. (2015) claim that there is a linear relationship between the level of prosocial language and the level of public disapproval of US Congress. A re-analysis demonstrates that this relationship is the result of a misspecified model that does not account for first-order autocorrelated disturbances. A Stata script to reproduce all presented results is available as an appendix.

In this paper, a method for measuring synchronic corpus (dis-)similarity put forward by Kilgarriff (2001) is adapted and extended to identify trends and correlated changes in diachronic text data, using the Corpus of Historical American English (Davies 2010a) and the Google Ngram Corpora (Michel et al. 2010a). This paper shows that this fully data-driven method, which extracts word types that have undergone the most pronounced change in frequency in a given period of time, is computationally very cheap and that it allows interpretations of diachronic trends that are both intuitively plausible and motivated from the perspective of information theory. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the method is able to identify correlated linguistic changes and diachronic shifts that can be linked to historical events. Finally, it can help to improve diachronic POS tagging and complement existing NLP approaches. This indicates that the approach can facilitate an improved understanding of diachronic processes in language change.
